Born to parents Wellington and Gloria Scatliffe on April 17, 1988 on the island of Tortola, Virgin Islands, 26 year old Joy M. Scatliffe, public servant and budding entrepreneur, is our Young Professional for this week.

Joy M. Scatliffe, who lives in Huntum’s Ghut on Tortola, is currently employed at the Department of Trade & Consumer Affairs as an Executive Officer/Personal Assistant to the Director.

Our Young Professional said that she believes in giving back to the community hence the reason for her willingness to remain in the Public Service where she takes pride in her work and always goes the extra mile for customers and coworkers alike. “I love every aspect of my job but mostly love assisting customers,” she said.

Her employment however does not stop there as she is the Manager and Owner of N’Joy Party Planners, a party planning business. She explained that it is her passion to help people and creativity that encouraged her to venture into this business.

“The challenges faced as an entrepreneur is that everyone is doing the same thing and it leaves me stuck trying to figure out how I can be different to stand out,” she said with regards to being an entrepreneur.

Our Young Professional stated that she always envisions herself in a business where customers are happy. She describes herself as being loving, friendly, helpful, caring, self-motivated, determined and a great multi-tasker.

Ms Scatliffe attended the Enid Scatliffe Pre-Primary School then Althea Scatliffe Primary School and completed her secondary education at the BVI High School now Elmore Stoutt High School. While in school her favourite subject was mathematics.

Our Young Professional continued her education at the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College where she obtained a Certificate in Supervisory Management & Certificate in Business Administration.

She is currently enrolled at Ashworth College where she will be graduating in August 2015 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Management.

Ms Scatliffe is a member of the Road Town Methodist Church where she worships regularly and serves as an Assistant Leader for the Youth Choir and a Leader for the Youth Fellowship.

Our Young Professional said she uses self-motivation to succeed in life. She stated, “Motivation begins with you… if you want to see a change you have to be the change you want to see.” Ms Scatliffe said that she was raised by praying parents and she believes that once you pray about something God will help you through, as tough as it may be.

Ms Scatliffe wishes to become a successful entrepreneur one day owning many businesses including the one that she currently owns and a business in the tourism field.

Our Young Professional’s advice to young people is, “Things will never be easy, however when you want something you do your very best and strive to accomplish your goals. There will be many obstacles you just have to know how to overcome them. Always think positive and positive things will happen. Follow your dreams and don’t stop until you reach your stars and beyond. Nothing in life comes easy but once you believe you would achieve your goal.”

Now here is a mature, promising, young professional with the right attitude. She leads and doesn't follow; she acts and doesn't complain or confirm to negativity; she knows who she is and she doesn't need to be patted on the back or praised. She simply gets the job done. Kudos Joy.
