Dogs are indeed man’s best friend, whether it be a poodle, a German Shepherd or a pit-bull, which is a special breed of dog that is beginning to become a favourite among dog lovers, including here in the Virgin Islands. Pit-bulls do not exist in large numbers in the VI, according to one VIslander who you can safely say knows a mountain about pit-bulls and other pets. He is our young professional for this week, Mr Jarrel ‘Jay’ Rhymer.

Taking up a career in rearing pit-bulls and caring for other breeds of dogs and animals bring out the heart and soul of our young professional. He is the owner, manager and caretaker of his own business ‘Two 84 bullies – BVI best bullies’. It’s a career that if taken away will surely rip his heart and soul out despite the fact that he possesses other skills that can earn him a dollar at the end of the day.

Jay’s love for dogs was nurtured by his parents from the time he was a little boy. “My parents used to always buy me pups, dogs for my birthday and as gifts when I was growing up. They knew I loved them and they nurtured that love,” he told Virgin Islands News Online.

“My mom always buy me a dog growing up, so I always had a dog, I always loving a dog, it was my responsibility to take care of this dog. I got into the game of dogs on Facebook and looking at the special show qualities of dogs and it took over my life from there,” he said.

While growing up, however, Jay never thought his love and passion for dogs would have taken him into the direction of a career path. Pursuing his academics, he was taking a liking for mechanics and did studies along that line for the greater part of his time spent in institutions of learning.

One thing led to another and he soon found himself leaning closer to branching out into something that was different and something that many persons would not dare to do and that was breeding, caring, grooming and selling dogs, specifically pit-bulls.

“I don’t know that there is anything in this world that can replace that as a love or a career for me, it’s my life, it’s what I love, and it’s what I see myself doing for the rest of my life.”

“My part time job is working here at Pet Planet but my full time job is back at my home where I am the CEO of Two 84 bullies. I breed pit-bulls in the Virgin Islands. I sell pit-bulls to persons in the USA and other countries around the world,” he said.

He handles this breed of dogs for shows as much as he does for the purpose of them being guard dogs. He said he had recognized that the pit-bull is a dog that is rarely seen around the VI and for that reason and other reasons he chose them to make him a career.

“Pit-bulls are especially good at pleasing people since they are strong and smart, they learn quickly and they are very adaptable.”

Jay added, "Pit-bull owners must accept their roles as ambassadors for the breed, and remain constantly aware of the fact that their actions and the actions of their dogs are having an impact on the breed’s future. That’s just what I do and that’s one of the reasons that I am following this type of career."

Being with his pit-bulls is also his hobby. Jay said that in his spare time you’ll find him doing nothing else but being with his dogs, except for that special time set aside for family matters. “Spending quality time with my girl, my 7-year-old pride and joy, my reason for living, I am speaking about my daughter Lyriq.”

His favourite sport is basketball which he loves looking at but not playing. Other than that, “I live for my dogs. I enjoy going to dog shows, competing in dog shows, anything around that.” In the industry of rearing pit-bulls, Jarrel said in the very near future he sees himself branching further into the industry by owning and grooming dogs on a larger scale and becoming a trainer for pit-bulls to participate in some of the shows on the world scene.

Asked about one special thing that persons should know about the dogs he rears, Jay said, “The one absolutely unselfish friend that man can have in this selfish world, the one that never deserts him, the one that never proves ungrateful or treacherous, is his dog.”

He further stated, “The fact is that big dogs are more powerful and can inflict more damage but it doesn't mean they are more aggressive or dangerous. It means owners need to be more responsible."

His words of advice to his fellow youth and others pursuing a career was, “Don’t allow anyone to tell you that you cannot, the only time you should be using that word “cannot” is to say you cannot make me fail, you cannot influence me negatively, you cannot take my dreams away from me. Stay close to things you love, things you have a passion for and you may be surprised what the outcome can be. For me, my favourite thing is dogs and it has walked me into a career for life.”

I love the man that can smile in trouble, that can gather strength from distress, and grow brave by reflection. Jay, your purpose may not always be obvious, but always remember that you have a purpose. There's only one way to succeed in anything, and that's to give it EVERYTHING. Proud of you my brother !

I so hope that prospective buyer are strongly told that these dogs are not for fighting. Pit bulls, like all dogs are taught to be mean. Having owned pit bulls they are loving, caring, family pets. Just "google" ELLE The Pit Bull and see what this breed is REALLY made of.
