This Week We Feature Young Professional Gregory A. Levons Snr
This week we feature a young man who accurately describes himself as a calm, cool and collective guy. His passion for giving back to his community is one to admire. His dream for his country is one of prosperity whereby he would like to see it not only prosper but prosper in the right way where development is controlled in such a way that the natural beauty of the island he hails from and resides on remains.
This patriotic young man is none other than Mr Gregory A. Levons Snr.
Hailing from the island of Anegada, Gregory firmly believes in the old saying "life begins at 40" and, although not yet there, he has been spending his maturing years preparing for the time when life will truly begin for him.
Community at heart
Our Young Professional is someone with his community at heart and has served as the President of the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) of the Claudia Creque Educational Centre, is a member of CERT, and also a vibrant church goer.
He stressed that the young people of today should be engaged in church where they will learn about God who will help them to discern right from wrong.
Schooling & work
Gregory received his primary and secondary schooling on Anegada before being granted a scholarship to attend the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC) but he said due to a few hiccups in documentation of the said scholarship his college life was short lived.
Nevertheless, Gregory is today functioning as a productive member of society. For the past eight years he has been working at the Water and Sewerage Department where he currently holds the position of Chargehand and is a very versatile worker and aids in any position that requires his attention, all in the interest of the community he loves.
When asked what motivated his job choice, Gregory, being the community oriented person he is, stated that he sees his job as a way of giving back to his community. "I went to school on the island and I feel it is only right and fair to give back to your community".
A love for the sea
Apart from his job, Gregory has a love for fishing and the open sea. "Growing up, my dad took care of the family by fishing. Going fishing with dad as a little boy, I grew to love fishing." He also mentioned that he was more into fishing during his younger years as compared to now due to his busy work schedule which restricts fishing to a weekend luxury, provided that the weather is good.
He even went on to say that if finances were favourable he would make fishing a full time job. "I love the sea. It's dangerous but I just have a love for the sea," he said.
"Young, prosperous, black entrepreneur, owning my own business in fishing," was Gregory's response when asked where he sees himself in the next 5 to 10 years. He added, "In the BVI, food is money and fishing is food.”
With that in mind, he stated that owning a business in the fishing industry means you have to learn to put yourself in the right particular type of fishing and he personally wants to be involved in deep sea fishing because he noticed that the VI does not have a very big market for deep sea fishing which is an opportunity he plans on taking advantage of.
Fatherly advice
Our Young Professional is also a dad who is devoting his time to nurturing his boys to ensure that they get the best chance at the best possible education.
At the same time he has positioned himself to grasp every opportunity to have his CV boosted, not only for his personal gains but Anegada’s.
In his advice to youth, Gregory said young people need to not just go to school but stay in school and get a proper education which will open their minds to all the bad that is going on in the world so that they can stay away from those things. "Teach them about teenage pregnancy and drugs so that they can stay away from those things."
