This Week We Feature Young Professional Glenroy T. Charles
There are several things in life that he loves, many careers in the palm of his hand to choose from but because of his extensive love and passion for the craft of jazz, our Young Professional for this Week Mr Glenroy T. Charles has decided on following the music line to lead his career in life.
It is more than just a career for him; it is also his hobby so when he needs some time to relax and meditate it is never complete without his saxophone on his shoulder. He could not speak to the notion of having an icon in the jazz industry as he says everyone in that craft has their individual taste but if he is to be subjected to sit back, relax and allow one person in the craft to play some smooth jazz music for him, that one person would most definitely be the famous Walter Beasely.
Glenroy has other options for career should one day things take a different turn. He has worked and is qualified in the medical field. He has future plans to pursue acting/modeling and in fact he holds a certificate as an international Professional Model having been certified by the John Casablancas Professional Career Centre.
“Primarily I am a saxophonist, primarily jazz but I also do pop and other genres as well. I am very versatile as well; it all depends on what audience I am after. I could (change) genres easily, so I am doing a lot of things in music right now,” he told Virgin Islands News Online.
As a Smooth Jazz saxophonist Glenroy is a popular face at many special public and private events. He plans to elevate himself in the industry. “I am doing a lot of things in music right now. I am looking forward to representing saxophone lines in the near future. I have a lot in the works so right now I am just focused on just getting my album ready and my live performances.”
Indeed before the end of this year he is working to have his first album of Smooth Jazz out on the market. He is however not ready to disclose the date for its release as along with the production he is working on updating the equipment.
Remember a man who used to be called ‘Trouble’, a very popular Flautist that was called upon to travel to England to play for the Queen back in the days? Yes! The man Edward Charles, now deceased, is the grandfather of our Young Professional for this week and growing up around him as a young boy the gift was passed on.
“He passed when I was very young but I started playing music very young maybe at five years old. I started with the recorder then eventually at ten years old I picked up the clarinet and shortly after that the saxophone and it went from there,” he fondly recalled.
He said music is a thing that comes naturally to him, “You can say I had a head start, I always have a way with music which helps me on the path.”
As it relates to being on the international scene, yes he is having that exposure though not in person. For the most part his recordings hit a big audience out there but he got his feet wet performing in England in late 2012 just before he started G Smooth music. “I did that and I liked it and that’s one of the things that made me decide to push for the music career full-time,” he said.
Put in a position to be among a group of young people having been chosen to give some bit of advice, Glenroy said the one message he would have for them would the importance of responsibility and maintaining a balance.
“You know it’s good to have fun and be social but you also have to put the work in the area you want to excel in. You cannot ignore that and want to have fun all the time. If you really want to get somewhere you know you have to put in the hard work because somewhere around the world someone is putting in their hard work to get to where you want to go. I would advise them to think of themselves of not just competing with locals but everyone who wants to get into your field… keep in mind you have to keep up to date,” he advised.
Come the next five years Mr Glenroy T. Charles says that you can expect to see him more prominent in the Smooth Jazz industry which includes performing at some of the high ranking jazz festivals internationally. “I am also looking at sync licensing and getting my music on TV, commercials and movies and so forth.”
