This Week We Feature Young Professional Emily A. C. Grant
“I dream big!” our Young Professional of this week exclaims, "All thanks to God for giving me wisdom, knowledge and understanding". She also lives by great ambition as she stays persistent to the quote “Great ambition is the passion of a great character” by Napoleon Bonaparte. At age 29, Emily is the epitome of a Young Professional who is always looking for a chance to do her own thing, to be her own person and to have things done her way.
Virgin Island News Online proudly introduces Emily Ann C. Grant, a proud Virgin Islander who hails from the beautiful island of Virgin Gorda. She was born to parents Claudia Modesta Stevens-Parillon, from whom she gets her sense of style; and Arthur Colville Grant, from whom she gets her love for music. Emily has three sisters, one brother, a niece and her step-dad, all of whom she has an extremely close bond with.
Emily started her early childhood education in Virgin Gorda and continued at the Bregado Flax Educational Centre, counting both the Primary and Secondary Divisions as her alma mater. She is an alumnus of the Hamilton Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC), where she obtained her Associate’s Degree in Finance in 2006.
She is also an alumnus of Florida International University (FIU) in Miami, Florida, where she began a double major, pursuing her Bachelor of Business Degree in Finance and her Bachelor of Business Degree in International Business in 2008.
Our Young Professional had been involved in numerous organizations and committees while attending FIU, and still holds memberships to some of these organizations. She is a member of Beta Alpha Psi, an honour society for students majoring in Finance and Accounting, a member of the Financial Management Association, the Finance Honour Society and the International Business Honour Society of Florida International University.
Emily has over eight (8) years of work and educational experience in the financial accounting field. She loves assisting people and is fanatical about professional customer service.
Starting her professional calling in 2001, Emily did an internship at Citco BVI, working amongst veterans in the financial field, where she fell in love with Finance. She then worked in the BVI Health Services Authority, at the Iris O'Neal Clinic in Virgin Gorda for a short while as a receptionist, doing many tasks including daily balancing of accounting records. She moved on to the Department of Education in 2002, working as a clerical trainee within the HR Unit. Emily worked and studied full time and left the Department in 2005, which enabled her to focus on college alone for the full year. Emily was employed in the Ministry of Education, under the arm of the Elmore Stoutt High School, assisting with the daily accounting, budgeting and operations for two years, and also once served as a Finance Credit Controller.
She is presently the Branch Supervisor of Century Insurance (general agents of Nagico) at the Virgin Gorda Branch, where she is responsible for the daily operations and functioning of the office.
Emily describes herself as having a passion for fashion and is extremely family oriented. She is presently the Manager of the family business, Shoe Essence, which is located in Valley, Virgin Gorda and also enjoys reading, networking, music and community involvement while she also loves to travel with her family and close friend.
Emily said she has always prided herself as displaying the characteristics of a true leader and not a follower. In her youth, she was deeply involved with the youths and was the lead singer for the St. Mary's Anglican Church youth group, participating in many competitions and singing at local events. She is presently a member of the Virgin Gorda Festival Committee, on the pageant sub-committee.
She is zealous about decoration and interior design and is now in the final phase of opening her own decorating and creative designs company, ‘Essence Décor’. “I have always had a passion for decorating and doing different things within interior designing,” she said. Once again, her family home circle will be involved in this business, as they have always assisted her and been there for her in the past.
Emily related that she is capable of inspired thinking and often applies this to material things. She has decorated for events such as prom, bridal showers, pageants and office parties. She sees this as a passion that not only drives the ability to learn new things, but also allows her to profit from the experience.
She is currently effecting the production of an interview workshop for this summer and said, “I think that a lot of young persons have a problem with getting jobs and keeping jobs.” With the workshop, she said young persons can come to learn how to prepare for an interview, how to draft cover letters and resumes, and how to dress for success, as she sees this as an important issue that some persons have and it needs to be addressed immediately. She stated that it is important for young persons to not only look at their lives from the perspective of a local, but to also try to branch out and think outside of the box as if they were to travel the world.
Emily encourages the youth to stay engrossed in the Lord, and put Him first in all that they do. “Understand the power of words and use them carefully. Pay attention to how you talk to yourself inside and out,” she said. “If there is anything that you have that is a dream,” she added, “don’t just look at it, but work towards it.”
She said that it is important to always strive to be as successful as possible and to always ask questions. She stressed the importance of education and trying to get involved in as many courses as possible, “If there is a specific course that you would like to take on or there is something specific you would like to do, just go for it,” she said.
“Stay focused on yourself and your character, never underestimate the stranger next to you, be careful of the social media and what you put out there,” our Young Professional advised, “as what you display, whether positive or negative, can never go away.” She also suggested that youths should try to seek out peers and role models who they can look up to.
“Ambition and determination is great for the soul,” she said, “never give up on your hopes and dreams and never tell yourself it’s too late. It is never too late to achieve anything that you want to.” Above all else, Emily advised, “Love yourself, love others and dream big!”
