This Week We Feature Young Professional Doneisha D. Maduro-Findlay
Meet the bright, ambitious, creative and determined Doneisha D. Maduro-Findlay, our Young Professional for this week.
An honour student all her life, the 20 year old is the child of Sixth District Representative Honourable Alvera Maduro-Caines and Donald Findlay. She grew up in the Baugher’s Bay area.
Trained as a professional cosmetologist and certified as a fitness instructor, the ambitious young woman and soon to be cosmetology teacher wants to bring the best salon and spa experience to the Virgin Islands and is working towards making this dream a reality. In addition to this she wants people to live healthy lives and is prepared to help them along the way as a fitness instructor.
“I have been an honour student throughout primary school and high school. I went to Elmore Stoutt High School and majored in Accounts where I was also an honour student. I went on to the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College where I studied business administration and furthering my studies I went into my profession which is cosmetology. I studied at Paul Mitchell’s Academy then I went on to Aveda Institute [in the United States]," she said, where she studied the science behind hair, nails and skin.
“In the near future I plan to open my salon and apart from that I will be teaching at the technical school as a cosmetology teacher come September, I am excited about that,” she said.
The young woman said that she likes to share what she has learnt. I have really learnt a lot and I would like to give back to the students and share what I have learnt,” she said.
She sees herself being a successful businesswoman and entrepreneur, having one of the greatest salons and spas in the Virgin Islands.
“It is my wish to see persons be more confident in and happy about themselves not just to please the community but for them to feel beautiful within. That is my goal... to help persons build their self-confidence, also make them happy seeing their outward appearance,” she said.
Our Young Professional is currently a Zumba instructor at the Save the Seed Energy Centre. “I actually took the course to become certified in that field as well,” she said. Admitting that she has had issues with her weight in the past, she said that she was able to manage it to the point where people come to her and ask what her formula was for shedding the pounds.
“In my Zumba classes I let people know that a healthy lifestyle does not necessarily mean seriousness or being [regimented]. I want them to enjoy it and have fun but I use that time to educate them about eating healthy,” she said.
“In the future I plan to get more in to the fitness area where I will actually be doing personal training and so forth,” she said.
Our Young Professional is an avid sports woman as well and grew up playing softball. “I have travelled with the BVI national softball team. I have played softball pretty much from the age of four until now,” said Maduro-Findlay.
“I am known for doing majorette as well…every Festival I have my troupe by the name of Diamond Girls that I have had since I was 12 years old. I have done Moko Jumbie as well so I am always very involved in the festivities,” she said.
Our Young Professional is also a contestant in the Miss British Virgin Islands this year. “I am contestant Number 1 so I am excited about that,” she said. She noted that as a contestant she will have to be a part of many activities.
“I would say that I am very determined. I have a goal I make a plan and I work towards it. I am very outgoing and energetic. I am very open. I am always willing to give advice and help out where I can. I want people to feel comfortable coming to me and asking questions,” she said.
In giving advice to young people, she said, “I want them to know that nothing worth having comes easy and that the only time that they fail is if they fall and never get back up. If you really want something you should work for it and push for it and continue to be self-driven.”
