Young Professional Buney H. Chinnery was immediately put on the breadline as a result of COVID-19, having lost his job as a chef due to the tourism sector coming to a halt. For this entrepreneurial youth; however, that wasn’t the end. He took some money from his savings to start a landscaping business called ‘pretty plants’.

Currently residing in the East End/Long Look District, Mr Chinnery attended the Jost van Dyke Primary School and then the Elmore Stoutt High School (ESHS).

While tertiary educations in not on the books right now, Our Young Professional said he enjoys learning to do gardening, fish, sail, cooking and carpentry.

Working the soil

“I am self-employed, my business is called pretty plants,” the proud business owner told Virgin Islands News Online on inquiry about what he does for a living.

He said the business focuses on encouraging and making customers farm easier by providing products such as planters boxes, garden benches among other things, including gardening maintenance or landscaping services.

Our Young Professional and father of one said his business was one that came out of the need to create an income.

“I previously worked at the Lambert Beach resort as a chef,” he said; however, he was laid off when the tourism industry came to a halt as a result of the current coronavirus pandemic.

Learning & Growing

“My biggest life lesson is learning to always be proactive or creative and hardworking. I learnt this lesson during the COVID-19 lockdown when I was frustrated with being locked inside doing nothing,” he told VINO.

While ‘Pretty Plants’ is fairly new to the landscaping scene, Young Professional Buney says his passion for farming and carpeting is what ultimately inspired him to make a move to business.

He said he also has big dreams of owning a construction company and owning heavy equipment, or venturing into watersport, a hardware store, the restaurant business and real estate once things progress.

Parting advice

Our Young Professional called on the Government to start supporting or funding young entrepreneurs to start up or to help boost their businesses.

“My advice to young people is to be ambitious and hardworking in life and to always chase their dreams,“ he said.

“Never give up even when you feel the odds are against you, just keep on striving for better in life,” Buney left as parting advice for youth looking to forge their own paths.

The business can be contacted via telephone number 1-284-344-6292.

I had the opportunity of purchasing my planting boxes and seedlings from this young man and I must say I was very impressed. I also used the opportunity to encourage him, as I love to see young men especially do something positive. I pray prosperity over you and that you will remain focused. One positive young man is much to be celebrated and supported. Big up my boy.

It is so great to see a young man doing something productive and positive instead of being on a corner hanging out wasting time. Good work, keep it up, hope others can find some type of motivation in this.

Buney, I do not know you but this story gives me a glimpse of who you are. I see a young man who is determined to be successful despite the challenges that he may face. You didn't sit back with your hands in your lap, waiting for someone to give you a hand out. Life threw lemons at you and you made lemonade. God has blessed you with some good business ideas and I encourage you to follow through on each one of them. May God sustain and strengthen you, may He bless the work of your hands and by the sweat of your brow you shall continue to eat.

I met this young man about 5 months ago for the first time. Very impressed. He is not a lazy man and has great potential. Really wanted to hire him but I had already committed to someone else.... or else the job was his. Has the ability to speak proper English (if needs be) and guess what?... he is a fluent Spanish speaker as well. May Jah guide and protect you young man!!
