This Week We Feature Young Professional Aisha K. Liburd
If you ever were to meet someone who was comfortable being herself, yet who is ever continuing towards her goal of self-improvement, it would be our Young Professional for this week Aisha Karimah Liburd.
She is a 30-year-old with the courage to reach for the career she loves. She is drawn to work in the hospitality industry.
Aisha who was born and raised on Tortola said, “My dad is from St Kitts and my mom from Nevis. They have lived in the BVI for over 30 years.”
She attended the Isabella Morris Primary School before going on to the then BVI High School. "I always made good grades... Math was my favourite subject in school. I haven't completed tertiary studies as yet. It is something I am working on,” she said.
“I want to study hospitality management with regard to hotel management,” she said.
Our Young Professional is currently an Executive Assistant at the BVI Financial Services Commission and she has been there for a little over a year.
“It's pretty interesting. It's unlike anything I have ever come into contact with in the workplace said our Young Professional.
Given that she had no experience in that field she did find it a bit of a challenge.
Prior to her current employment, Aisha worked as a legal secretary with law firms and she had worked also with two banks.
She said she enjoyed the experience of meeting different people and assisting them in meeting their needs while at the same time making lifelong friends along the way.
Why hospitality?
We asked our Young Professional why the jump to the hospitality sector and she offered this response: “I chose hospitality because I generally like helping persons and assisting them... Making sure that they are accommodated to the fullest. I'm a very service minded person.”
“I am interested in the diversity of interaction that would come with that field,” she said.
Liburd is confident that her experience in the banking sector will be a plus for her working in the hospitality industry. "I've been a teller and I very much enjoyed that position. I think that assisting people is something that comes naturally to me," she said.
Liburd has been a volunteer with the VI Festival and Fairs Committee for the past ten years and this year she was the Chairperson of the Road Town Festival Parade Committee.
She has also been a member of the Rotaract Club of Tortola for over seven years. “Rotaract is for people 18 to 30 and it is based upon community service and professional development,” she said, adding that she is also a Past President of the club.
“In terms of other organisations that I have been involved with, generally if there is anything that I can assist with in terms of philanthropy I would help,” she said, adding that she personally donated to the drive to assist Dominica following the floods some weeks ago.
“There might be a day when I may need help. You never know what may happen and I would like to think that somebody would help me or my community if they can,” she said.
“In terms of other organisations that I am a part of, I am a part of two other benevolent organisations which are Masonic organisations: one is the Daughters of Isis and the other is the Order of the Eastern Stars,” she said.
But apart from work and her philanthropy she finds time for herself and her family and friends.
“Generally I am a very easy going person. I can be quiet, easy to approach I would think…I love to read, go sailing…I enjoy music, just spending time with my friends. I am a mom. I have a teenage daughter,” she said.
Advice to youth
Asked what her advice to youth would be, Liburd responded, “I would just tell them to follow your mind; follow your heart. That is something I noticed about myself that I didn’t do enough of. [Your mind] usually leads you into the right direction so don’t ignore it.”
