There is need for a ‘solid 3rd political party’- Radio Caller

- said people must have a viable option if VIP unable to get its act together
With the apparent disunity in the Opposition Virgin Islands Party (VIP), there is a need for a third political party, one that is united and solid, according to a radio caller to the 3D Show on 780 AM ZBVI on Friday February 3, 2017. Photo: VINO/File

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- A caller to the 3D Show on 780 AM ZBVI on Friday February 3, 2017 said in light of the apparent disunity in the official Opposition Virgin Islands Party (VIP), there is a need for a third political party, one that is united and solid.

The caller remarked that the state of affairs of the VIP is “very disappointing” in relation to the fight over the Leader of Opposition seat between the incumbent Hon Julian Fraser (R3) and newcomer and Chairman of the VIP Hon Andrew A. Fahie (R1).

VIP cannot get itself together

“It is very disappointing …the VIP is a party that has been around for a number of years. They are now in the Opposition, because we do need an Opposition. Now we do need an effective Opposition, and it is sad, it is sad to see what is going on in the party concerning the Hon Fraser and the others of the party,” he said.

According to him persons feel there is a need for a third party because the VIP cannot get itself together and it seems like there isn’t a second party. “So we need to get a third party in the event that the VIP can’t get its act together, at least we will have another party. We cannot have just the National Democratic Party (NDP) running the country and no Opposition. We need a solid party, we need a party that is together and ready to run this thing.”

Time has come to step aside

He said in the last election, persons said they would not vote for the VIP if Hon Fraser was the leader, and it is time for him to step aside and that is in the best interest of the party and the people.

“…This is not about self, this is the thing as human beings we have to recognise that when the time comes for us to step aside we have to man up and then call it and do what we need to do. I would humbly say to Mr Fraser, work with the party my brother, you may not be up here where you used to be but work with the party. That is the way it is in life sometimes,” he added.

He also said he is not sure having Hon Fahie as the Opposition Leader will make a difference but that is what the people are calling for.

“But for sure you cannot go back down that same road because if you go back down there you will lose before you start,” he warned.

A divided party cannot stand

Meanwhile, host of the programme, Doug Wheatley wished the party well, saying that sometimes people forget that the reasons they are politicians is because of the people who vote for them and put them in these positions and it must be realised that the people can have them removed.

“So, therefore, there has to be unity and as soon as you can get unity in the party I think it would be better for everyone.”

In a press release on January 31, 2017, a day after Hon Fraser blasted the VIP for allegedly deceitfully ousting him as Chairman, VIP President Dr Natalio ‘Sowande Uhuru’ Wheatley said the party is committed to the process of mediation between the Chairman and Hon Fraser with the aim of resolving the impasse between the two members.

A meeting of the Congress is planned in that regard.

Power fight is rampant in all part and all institution in the BVI. Only God knows why? Having a third-party will be the same power fight...Sad. So Sad. Why Lord? Is too much greed. Too much self righteousness, seems like no one is satisfied with 2nd or 3rd... Atlease Dr Smith is respected by all his members and the people of the BVI..

Someone should point out to both the NDP and the VIP that the BVI is a land of laws and not a country that swings back and forth according to the whims of which politician wants power NOW

We need a 3rd choice. The 2 legged stool is not working for us anymore; we need to diversify just like how our economy need a 3rd leg for a more sustainable future.

There's no fight, division nothing. All you stop making a big deal out of nothing. Some people rather kill the party if they don't have power. Fraser needs to leave he tried as chairman and fail he's loosing his constituencies. Just leave the VIP party and go go go. All the bickering will come to an end. All you know how to milk a cow. Why is this news today Sunday? Let me guess we we trying to entertain or it's information gathering time. Just ignore this whole crap. Soar losers want to destroy everybody life. Life is not all about politics and power ignorance and arrogance.

My boy your blog is so stupid. If Fahie and his cronies is so great they should be able to go ahead without Fraser. All they have to do is build their so call party and isolate Fraser in a corner. They are going to spend so much time on the Fraser issue that NDP is going to catch them with their pants down in another snap election. I never saw a party that don't learn from past mistakes. makes you wonder.

I challenge Fraser to form this solid 3rd party then he will see he's not wanted as Premier. It's not that we don't want him to prosper in other areas we just don't want him we Premier. He could even put the most heavenly person on he solid 3rd party and he will get the same result. Enough is enough time to quit. You can't force the people Fraser no sah. Give us some peace.

I agree. 3rd Party is obviously the way to go. No doubt. It's the only way to keep NDP out.. This present VIP is not the answer.

The NDP is floundering and trying to find its footing. On the other hand, tribal politics is rampant in the VIP dysfunction. Hon Fahie emerged decisively victorious over Hon Fraser for the VIP chairmanship. He had old MO (momentum) on his side but he surprisingly squandered it over an unnecessary feud with Hon Fraser for Leader of the Opposition, having publicly stating that he was not interested in it. The Opposition Leader would have solved it itself over time with no political cost. Fahie should have focused his energy on taking back the government, outlying how he ( VIP) would deliver more and higher quality services with the same or less resources. How it would improve education, healthcare, economy, public safety, infrastructure..........etc.

No doubt the behavior and performance of both major political parties may have flinged the door wide open for the bursting on the scene of a serious, national interest focused, 99% friendly, humbled...........etc political party. A self interest, elitist, opportunistic, and purely traditionalist party need not apply. Any new party must be willing sacrifice for the national interest, not self interest. It must be transparent, responsible, accountable and be good steward of taxpayers resources. It must have what it takes to put the country on a solid course well into the 21st Century. The iconic HL Stoutt and the VIP started the race well but its successors have bobbled the baton. Virgin Islanders, the nation is calling and needs your national service.

The mind is like a parachute, it only works when it's opened. We must be open to a solid 3rd Political Party in our country.

Can somebody tell me what exactly will change with a new party? How will a new party unify the country. All you so dam ungrateful. Ndp stinks. Give Fahie a chance why all you so hot to kill the VIP. Alll you grow up eating and flourishing under VIP now all you so ungrateful. We all see and know the problem. Back in the days man jump party if they ain't happy. Fraser is the only stubborn one like he don't know how to go bout he destructive ways. All you want new party prepare for the baggage that come with it. I am one virgin islander that don't support a new party at this time. Already there's division.

Fahie @$$& up..he had it going..even convinced me as a solid district 3 Fraser supporter that he was viable. Then suddenly he is fighting an unnecessary battle for opposition leader. The way I see it, opposition leader should not be in his vocabulary since the only thing he intends to do is win. Let someone from the NDP worry about being opposition leader for goodness sake. My family is 8 vote strong in the 3rd for fraser and it will remain this way for now.

You all seem to forget that when Fraser and Fahie could not decide, they asked the Governor to appoint the leader of the opposition (the VIP having omitted to state in their constitution who would be the leader if/when in opposition). The Governor gave them a month, and when they could not agree, he was asked, and appointed Fraser on balance of experience. He is very unlikely to reverse that decision during the rest of the life of this parliament, except in exceptional circumstances. So Mr Fahie is wasting his breath for now and should get on with being an effective part of the opposition team, such as it is.
