ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI –The People’s Empowerment Party (PEP) believes that education at an early age must go hand in hand with the development needs of the Territory and that persons must be channeled into the areas most needed in order to build the economy.

This is according to the President of the PEP Natalio D. Wheatley aka Sowande Uhuru who was at the time speaking on the PEP’s inaugural radio talk show aired on Monday September 29, 2014 on ZBVI 780 AM.

He pointed out that the party believes that education is a main factor in tackling many of the problems that young people face currently.

“I notice some very serious and troubling trends among our young people as it pertains to education and I believe the education system can be the place and must be the place where we can deal with a lot of the problems our young people are experiencing…whether social problems whether cognitive problems, whether behavioural problems,” said Wheatley.

Speaking on the core values of the PEP, the newest political party in the Virgin Islands, Wheatley said that there must be integrated educational development of the Territory for it to prosper.

“We speak about integrated development strategies of policies, programmes and projects which means that you education system is linked up to your economic system, your social system and your health system,” he said.

“Sometimes we are doing things in a very haphazard, disjointed and disconnected way and that’s why as one of our core values we want to make sure that everything is integrated,” he said, throwing a jab at the incumbent National Democratic Party and the other Opposition party the Virgin Islands Party.

“We have been speaking a long time about having a national plan. I think it is more than the time for a national plan,” he said.

Yes Sowande. That is why the Minister has ensured that tourism and financial services are now in school. That new key stage testing will focus on actual wholesome learning. That's why he is building an accredited technical school. These things have been done to address the issues you highlight.

Some of you could only get personal but fail to realize that for the past three years the education system has gone backwards with little or no progress, nothing done and just politics playing!

One of the problems young people have is fathers who don't pay child support

What we need to do is throw a jab at fathers who show off their children and don't pay child support. Our core value should be "feed our children".
