“Them forcing themselves on us” – Picko Moff on UK pressuring OTs
On the Tuesday, March 26, 2019, edition of ‘Hard Talk’ on Tola Radio VI, hosts Julio S. Henry and Kaream K. Pickering aka 'Picko Moff' echoed similar sentiments expressed by both the Premier and other radio hosts such as ZBVI’s Claude O. Skelton-Cline, that the Virgin Islands (VI) must join other territories in fighting collectively against the outside pressure.
Pushing Back
“Ladies and gentlemen there are six territories right now in the Caribbean and all of us right now need to be discussing, having a conversation on this… these recommendations, because the UK government, have within two months to make a decision as to what direction they going to take,” Mr Henry told his listening audience.
According to Henry, “Bermuda is pushing back, Cayman Islands is pushing back… I haven’t heard much news from Anguilla, Montserrat,” he said in putting forward the idea that the VI needs to make concrete moves to defend itself.
According to ‘Moff’, “It’s like a hostile takeover them trying to do, like them forcing themselves on us… Before the relationship was like we follow the rules and you going leave us be, whatever rules you put… we just follow the rules,” he highlighted in pointing out that the UK's new agenda is to impose imperial legislation.
“We aint going stand for that, there’s one thing to give us rules, give us reasonable rules to abide by, and it’s one thing to force you on us… that’s what they trying to do,” he said vociferously.
Regional Solidarity
New Premier and Minister of Finance, Hon Andrew A. Fahie (R1), during a recent special meeting at the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) in Guadeloupe told regional leaders that the VI will continue to seek regional solidarity in standing up to “a new aggressive push from outsiders”.
According to Hon Fahie, they will fight against forces, “which seems determined to issue edicts to its overseas territories in the region, without paying attention to the expressed will of the people, and ignoring our own values and customs which are deeply fashioned by both history, geography and our Faith.”
Further, Mr Pickering pointed out that the UK is now facing BREXIT and looking to put OTs in the same type of pressure they are facing in Europe. “They are running from BREXIT and trying to put the same thing on us, that’s unfair,” he told the listening audience.
