Will there be a vast war in the Middle East? The Trump Administration has killed Quassem Suleimani, Iran’s top military leader in an airstrike.

This is the biggest escalation in tensions since the Iran hostage crisis 40 years past. Iran’s leaders have vowed a harsh response. It may not be a coincidence that President Donald Trump ordered the attack in the middle of his impeachment heading into an election year.

Throughout history, authoritarians have used wars to distract the public and rally support.

The fact is – and this includes Overseas Territories of the UK- the US attack on Iran’s most revered military commander affects everyone on earth. How: because, if this matter spirals out of control, global security worsens. Think of even greater scrutiny and safety checks before boarding an airliner.

The UK is the USA’s closest ally. A US war with Iran imperils UK interests just as much as it does the US’s. Then there is the economic impact. Oil no longer decides global economic growth.

However, a sharp increase in oil prices will drive up inflation, especially in non-oil-producing countries such as these Virgin Islands.

Think about gas prices going up to $6 a gallon at the pump? Then there is the multiplier effect of an increase in the oil price: think of increasing prices of imported products owing to the increasing transport costs of shipping goods to the Caribbean. The prices of oil-based products such as plastics also spiral.

It is impossible to assert that a new Middle Eastern War will result from the killing of the Iranian Military Commander.

However, bear in mind that World Wars 1 and 2 started through miscalculation.

And when the gunfire and bombing starts, it is frequently impossible to end a war until everything has been reduced to rubble, with the deaths of hundreds of thousands of innocents.

Quassem Suleimani was no choir boy. But his targeting and murder by the stable genius, the foreign policy genius, military expert (knew more than the seasoned generals) was a gross miscalculation. The Iranians have vowed to get even, get revenge and this may not be an idle threat. The escalation appears highly likely. The action poses a threat to Americans everywhere, especially in the Mid-East and Europe. Many believe this killing was intended to be a distraction from Trump’s domestic issues, ie, impeachment........etc. Could this action escalate into WWIII? In any event, the conflict between the US and Iran is not going to end no time soon. We cannot be lulled into thinking that no action in the near term means that all is well. Trump will be long gone from office but the disagreement will live on. The nuclear agreement between Iran and US and allies brokered by the Obama administration was not perfect but it brought some calm, bringing Iran to the table. The US prematurely withdrawing from the agreement because Obama’s name was associated with it has sadly brought things to this boiling point, threatening to thrust the world into turmoil and on the precipice of war.

” But his targeting and murder by the stable genius, the foreign policy genius, military expert (knew more than the seasoned generals) was a gross miscalculation.” Wonder who Quiet Rebel flinging rock stones at. President Trump jealousy of former President Obama, his norm busting foolishness, above the law behaviour, unconventional nonsense, constitution shredding, self promotion...........etc has brought world to the brink of war. His weakneed Republicans, and scared of shadow Democrats must share in the misfortune of putting the world at fragile juncture. History will be unkind to them. Does the unconventional governing nonsense and hasty decision making ring a bell? Ting to talk. Oh, Boris and the Donald is two peas in pod. Britannia has lost its empire but still think it rules the wave and the sun still never sets over its empire. It is trying to be relevant but is struggling to find an area in which it can be. It is trying to be a bridge between US and rest of Europe, trying to bring about Mid-east piece, which it had a say in fragmenting........etc but failing.
