The BREXIT horror hovering about the UK

Ok. This Old Boy, to the consternation of his army of critics, never believed Brexit was a good idea. He understood that in a world where regions were integrating and where the two main superpowers- China and the USA- were increasingly bellicose, staying within a united Europe offered the type of protection one obtains living in a well-fortified castle in a vast, terrifying, and violent forest.

Billionaire Democratic activist Michael Bloomberg stated the obvious a few years back when it became obvious the UK was entertaining the foolishness of quitting the European Union stating that, "Brexit is the single stupidest thing any country has ever done."

And since Prime Minister Boris Johnson went to reside at Number 10 Downing Street he has been accused of running the UK like a Russian Tsar.

Johnson’s Government in spite of possessing a Commons Majority of 80 plus has been a catastrophe. The mishandling of the Covid 19 Pandemic is simply one example of the huge failure in electing a ‘’posh, swaggering, upper class, Bohemian.’’

It is painful for Britons to observe the depth to which the country has descended; the moral bankruptcy; the corruption; the abuse of office; the plunge in democracy; with the cabinet usurping the powers of Parliament.

And the Tory Government is handling Brexit very poorly. The ‘’Three Wise Men’’ believe 2021 is going to be a horrific year for the UK.

The UK faces a serious threat from the surge in support for Scottish Independence. And Northern Ireland will see huge instability as the support for remaining in the EU fosters a drive for uniting with Southern Ireland with further fears for an uprising if borders are created between North and South at the coast.

Then the UK economy that has already been pummeled by the Pandemic faces even greater contraction, especially if Britain crashes out of the EU. Thousands of shops and businesses will close. High streets will empty of customers. Tax revenues will fall. Bankruptcy and unemployment will climb as the economy contracts.

Brexit was simply a ‘’con.’’ Nothing will be better for Brexit. Already UK pension funds have taken a hit. Local governments are headed for a financial crash. Britain’s National Health Service is already being overwhelmed.

Add to these woes is the fact that the Pandemic will not be over any time soon. So the UK will be fighting without the type of backing the EU would have offered.

Then the USA is a very weak horse to ride these days in terms of a trade deal. There is no US Trade deal in sight and if Joe Biden wins the presidency the UK will be forced to eat humble pie and accept whatever trade deal the Europeans put on offer.

Yes Brexit was a very bad move indeed.

Ok, let me see if I can break it down a bit...

BREXIT = British Exit (from the EU)

The EU = European Union = Economically allied European nations and their satellite territories that share common trading blocs, currency, border security, policies, etc. Sorta like the United States... many states, common Government, strength in numbers.

The BVI = satellite territory of Britain. Regardless of the BVI's Americanised values such as use of currency; adoption of culture, clothing and values; close economic ties and dependence upon US products and goods (like food); ease of travel and availablity to give birth to children in the US (thereby granting them dual citizenship and a doorway to expanded opportunities, the fact remains that the BVI is a BRITISH territory.

Any of the above mentioned privileges we have were not achieved in a vacuum but because of the leeway granted by agreements between the US and British governments. There are plenty of other Caribbean countries that used to belong to one larger nation or the other at some point in time. The BVI / USVI partnership and resulting open-door privileges are an anomaly that hasn't been repeated elsewhere as far as I am aware.

And while Britain has often taken a rather casual, sometimes neglectful, even foster-parentish approach to the BVI, the truth is we are benefitted in intangible ways by being associated with England. The territory is seen as having a stable form of government (the Westminister form of parliament), backed by a major world power (Britain), governed by English law, reliant on England for primary defense resources (we have no standing army, and any Coast Guard aid from the USVI comes with the blessing of the previously established cross-territory partnership), and until recently benefited from any of the EU-powered cross-border travel, trade & residency benefits.

Its a mixed bag to be sure. But bottom line... if England feels the pain of BREXIT, you bet it will trickle down and affect our economy as well in ways foreseen and unforeseen. Life isn't a vacuum, and no man (or island) stands alone. World evens can have major impacts on us... so pay attention.
