‘The 9th district was not lacking powerful representation’ – Dr Hubert O’Neal

VALLEY, Virgin Gorda, VI – The ‘never say die’ candidate on the National Democratic Party (NDP) slate for the Ninth District seat, Dr Hubert O’Neal, has said the people of the district were not lacking proper representation over the years. This, however, was in no way giving credit to long-time legislator Hon Ralph T. O’Neal OBE as Dr O’Neal claimed he was always behind the scenes advocating on the people’s behalf.

He also told the large crowd gathered at Lee Road in Virgin Gorda during his campaign launch last evening, May 13, 2015 that the challenges the district continues to face did not happen with the National Democratic Party.

Referred to by Minister for Health and Social Development Honourable Ronnie W. Skelton as the gentle giant, Dr O’Neal said he has been constantly representing the interest of the district under the current and other previous administrations and that, according to him, included the expansion of the Nurse Iris O’Neal Health Centre since 1999.

“The airport was improved and re-opened and now there is daily regular flights scheduled into and out of that airport. The construction of the state of the art Iris O’Neal, Nurse Iris O’Neal medical facility that I have been campaigning for since 1999 has begun, all of you have seen that,” he said to the crowd.

Other things he alluded to as having been advocated for by him were a proper ambulance service, the new Jeffery Caines Basketball Court, the Walters Recreational Park, issuing of land titles and the soon construction of the main Lee Road.

“These are the actions I have been campaigning for, for many years…. My people of Virgin Gorda and Anegada, these are not elections gimmicks.”

Actions speak louder than words

Dr O’Neal alluded to the many others who for the first time are now seeking to take up the seat in the House of Assembly as the Ninth District representative with the retirement of Honourable Ralph T. O’Neal OBE who has served the territory and the very district over the past 40 years.

“Many candidates are coming to you now making many promises, some are even members of a party that has been in power for much longer that the NDP, now suddenly they are going to turn your nights into day, they are going to take your sufferings away, they are going to roll your dark clouds away but when it comes to doing and showing it’s going to take some noise. Remind them that actions speak louder than words,” said Dr O’Neal.

He also said the other candidates are now coming with their promises to fix all the challenges that the people are experiencing. He, however, said the challenges are not new. “They did not occur during the National Democratic Administration. Where were they?” he asked rhetorically. “Where were they seeking to serve? I have been advocating on your behalf time and time again. Actions speak louder than words.”

5 the magic number?

“I have come a long way. I have come again for the 5th time, that’s got to be the magic number, seeking your support to serve you with good representation,” said Dr O’Neal.

“Most persons would have already given up after two attempts, but not me. My love for my people and my district and my recognition of their unrealised potential keep the passion burning in my spirit.

“If you see a little tear roll down my eyes don’t be surprised because I feel the warmth, I feel welcomed, I feel good here in my district here in Virgin Gorda. I want to thank all the Anegadians for coming across the seas to be with me here tonight,” said an emotional Dr O’Neal.

The Virgin Gordia also took time out to thank Hon O’Neal for his lifelong commitment and his service and accomplishment to the district. “We must pay tribute to whom tribute is due. I am pleased to hear that he would be publishing his memoir. I look forward to reading it because I am certain there will be much to learn from his vast memory and experience,” Dr O’Neal stated.

Along with Dr O’Neal, the persons vying for the Ninth District seat are Mr Elton L. Sprauve of the Virgin Islands Party (VIP), Faye J. Reese-Charles of the People’s Empowerment Party and Independent candidates Dr Rawle R. Hannibal, Mr Albert O. Wheatley and Mrs Stephanie I. Faulkner-Williams.

It is so sad to see the folks supporting a party that is busy selling out our lands and islands right in front of their faces!!! I am wondering if they are thinking beyond June 8, in that if and a big IF the NDP should go back in power, they would be able to complete their deals with B****n and J*****n where they will be giving away the air port in Beef Island, Prickly Pear Island (a national park) in North Sound, the Gun Creek and Gun Point area, the vast amount of land in the Great Hill, Joe Bay, just to name a few. Yes, you are entitled to vote for who you want, but just know that those guys have great plans on giving away the land to the billionaires by the hundred of acres and complete island, also when they do that we cannot even visit those areas, look at what they have allowed to do with Oil Nut Bay, the locals cannot go up there, only Dr. S & P and a few others in their camp who have homes up there as payment for raping our country. People of the 9th district and elsewhere be wise...

Do you have a job? Do many other persons in the 9th have more opportunities? The government cann not do everything so if they have to sell for us to get so be it. It seem like you guys forget bout Ralphie....he take land owned by family and sell out....what we the taxpayers getting? he take crown land and sell out. what we the taxpayers getting? He has served 9th District for how many years and as CHief Minister and Premiere and yet still you guys have to travel to do business......not even our bank...National Bank on Virgin Gorda........wouldn't talk bout Hospital......hmmmm. How many seniors over there, how many boat man over there. He just sat relaxed and let others took him over. He left the D9 behind for some years and teh current leader of VIP just thinks for himself and those in his circle. That is why D3 going vote him out and let us see who will be Premier.

So can you'll tell me what will happen after the election? Far as I see for a few years I see more hungry people, more taxes, very little job opportunities .....more heads hanging low, more people leaving to other shores, more consultants,, more boards....but suddenly the place lively, promises and opportunities aplenty and , and ......It all feels like a gimmick. Mind you I see how in a short time everything is being done almost like in the wink of an eye. Where we're the expected structured and deliberate planning on fixing our infrastructure, while on this road rush thing I am so fearful that all this millions will cost us millions more. Who checking these sites, who is doing quality assurance,? Who making sure that the people is getting proper work for all that money. I saw no steel put into the frames before they drop the concrete.

I am so sick and tired of persons on these blogs saying Hon. O'Neal has given us poor representation or he has done nothing for the 9th district and the like. I will be the first to say that not enough was being done but to say nothing is an overstatement. We need to realize that the BVI has a service-oriented economy and doesn't export tangible goods to generate revenue. That is why borrowing from Social Security and the Caribbean Development Bank is the order of the day because we are a resource poor Territory. I have always stated that the BVI economy needs to be more diversified in order to pay for programs such as NHI and infrastructural projects such as the Cruise Pier instead of raising fees across the board with the vexing high cost of living. Financial Services is what is keeping this Territory afloat but there is so much revenues to go around. We need to encourage more onshore business to go along with the current offshore practices but in order to achieve this our infrastructure needs to be vastly improved rather than the regular patch works being done for years. Tourism quite frankly needs to more diverse rather than the usual sun, sand and sea which I feel we are way behind our Caribbean neighbours. I thank Hon. O'Neal for his years of service but what you guys failed to realize even though he is the representative, he also needs the help of the four At-Large representatives regardless of party affiliation. My take is with this NDP Administration, they are NOT focusing on what needs to be focused on. I encourage foreign investment that are in the best interest of the entire BVI people and not a selected few. I feel so sorry for civil servants who hasn't received their increments to date. As a registered voter, I am really worried for my BVI but I hope and pray that the right forward-thinking people are voted in at this critical time in our Territory.

Well I will say this and who don't like can go to hell. I am listening to these political ads all the time, I also read the blogs and listen to the ordinary men on the streets and most of the comments are that the NDP is not telling the truth and they are a bunch of liers. Now I have no choice but to believe what am reading and what am hearing. I say that to say this, when Hubert O'Neal announced his intention to run in the 2015 elections, he clearly stated that he was not with a party and he does not know which party will asked him to run with them, at that time I considered him to be an independent candidate. Later on he announced that he will be a candidate for the NDP. Now what amazes me is that in the NDP ad in support of their candidate, they are boasting of their accomplishments in the 9th district and giving credit to Hubert for those accomplishment, so my question is: if Hubert was not with the NDP from since the last election, how can they credit him now as been a part of their accomplishments in the 9th? Now I have also listened to the NDP ad in support of Dr. K. Pickering and its a shame what they are stating that he has accomplished. They mentioned the YEP center, how long now has that center established? They talked about tennis court, which is now run down and I wonder who uses it, they mentioned Fat Hogs Bay Beach, I wonder where is that, and to my amazement they talk about him building a football stadium, oh my, my, I thought that was a FIFA sponsored project, so how can they try to give Dr. K credit for it. We all know that he has not accomplish much for D-7, so please NDP, stop lying to the people and try to mislead us with those kakabull ads. We surely will not fall for them

Last night I paid special attention to the rally held up in VG, and Dr.O'Neal mentioned that although he was not the elected member, he was working quietly behind the scenes, and in fact Walwyn mentioned it too, I smiled because every one knows that NDP wanted Mr.Grant for the Rep, and they threw out sprat to catch a whale and it did not work, so they had no choice but to pull Dr.O'Neal in, who are they trying to fool?Three strikes and you are 'out' Sir. You already had four strikes, do you really want a fifth? Their 'assumed' smartness is going to out - smart them. They are all just terrible for the country. They boast about what they quickly tried to do, then call election, and expect the folks in the BVI will buy that. You can fool some of the people some of the time but not all of the people all of the time. They seem to be running out of steam though, hope this all back fires.

my good and patient people. we all have faced many adversities together as a nation regardless of which party is in power. many people have their own beliefs and common knowledge but what remains the truth is that all of these political dramas on stage affect not just those who can go to the polls but even our children. these politicians may not realize that one day they will have to answer. MUCH IS EXPECT FROM WHOM MUCH IS GIVEN. that's why i within my heart and soul believe that God has direct the spirit of MR. ALBERT WHEATLEY to walk down the middle as an INDEPENDENT candidate to represent the voiceless amongst the voices. lets give him a chance. it is written"Let your light so shine forth that ALL may see the GOOD that you do and give glory to God."
