ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Many of them probably use Main Street almost every day and it may have not been the first time for any of the students either, however, today’s (May 16, 2013) walk through Main Street was one of enlightenment and fascination as students from primary schools across the Territory were given a historical tour of one of the most popular streets in the Virgin Islands.

And to ensure that the students were taken through their tour unhindered and without distraction, ranks of the Traffic Department of the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force were at almost every turn to steer traffic clear of Main Street or to ensure that it was safe for the students to proceed.

The tour was part of the activities of International Museum Day, which will be observed tomorrow, Friday May 17, 2013.

The 2013 observance is being hosted by the Ministry of Education and Culture and the Department of Culture under the theme, “Museums (Memory + Creativity) = Social Change”.

Among the schools on tour today were, Robinson O’Neal Primary School, Althea Scatliffe Primary, Leonora Delville Primary, Ebenezer Thomas Primary, Isabella Morris Primary, Francis Lettsome Primary and the Century Montessori schools.

The students were seen busy taking notes and paying rapt attention to their tour guides, who included Librarian Ms Yvonne Mactavious.

In celebration of International Museum Day tomorrow, the Sir Olva George´s Plaza will be transformed into a traditional market place from 11 A.M. Fresh produce and traditional soups will be on sale including pumpkin, fish, bullfoot and peas.

The public is also invited to be a part of the re-enactment of the 1949 March which starts at 4 P.M. tomorrow at the Road Town Band Stand.

this is so excellent. Finally, let's get the next generation interested in protecting historical sites. touching, feeling seeing a building is so different than a meer picture. Of course, when the building is torn down, we need that too. Maybe they will pick up where Ermin Penn left off and document what old houses we have left. They are being torn down one by one and no one notices. It is time to educate the families as to the value of their ancesteral homes.

In any other country there is a historical commission which presides over certain districts and regulates how something is changed. In the long run, property values go up because it becomes an elite address. Please don't let an ugly 4-6 story building go up on Main St in front of the Folk Museum. It is the calling card and first impression to those on the ferry, which can suggest BVI doesn't really care about its history. (also, electronic billboards which are illegal are inappropriate). Please get a qualified historian to help organize and promote this and other important areas.
