ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Commentator Courtney de Castro has called for a report on the state of the Territory given burning questions that exist on the expenditure and priorities of government.

On his Speak Out BVI TV programme aired on May 25, 2013 de Castro suggested residents should be told what plans are in place to address difficult decisions that are to be made in these “tough economic times”.

“If the decisions were hard before the economy changed, imagine they must be much harder now that the economy is the way that it is,” the talk show host said. He also stated that there are no signs that the economy is going to let up any time soon.

“What are our priorities at this time in 2013 taking into consideration all the things that we have been through so far and where we’re going to go forward?” de Castro asked.

According to de Castro, whenever there is a plan or budget, there should be an awareness of what progress is made by mid-term. “We should have some idea… as one of the politicians said, whether you need to tighten your belt or loosen your belt,” he said.

He commented that budgeting is very important and added that revenue and expenditure for the government is made possible by the people of the Territory. “A whole lot of taxes go into areas and things that are not visible, but they are taxes,” he explained.

de Castro said there needs to be balance, “I think that any government with transparency and proper accountability can make a good case for any of the expenditure that is being done, so I think we need to hear what is going on.”

The host suggested a report on the state of the Territory would allow persons asking questions to become informed of what the situation is really like.

de Castro also described the question of expenditure by the current government as a burning issue that has been covered extensively by the media

we need a list of pending projects, costs and time line.
I find it interesting that the government stated not too long ago that tourism was up 3% despite the economy. It might be a good time to sit tight and get all ducks in a row. get organized and report in the paper. Plans for development should also be available to the public in the papers so all can see.
