Teen reportedly shoots self accidentally on St Croix

FREDERIKSTED, St Croix, USVI- — A 15-year old male was wounded from a gunshot early Tuesday morning, December 31, 2019 near the Crucian Christmas Festival Village in Frederiksted, St Croix, US Virgin Islands, [US] Virgin Islands Police Department (VIPD) Public Information Officer Toby Derima has announced.

At approximately 3:17 am, VIPD officers responded to the playground area adjacent to the Festival Village after a concerned citizen reported that a person was wounded by a gunshot.

Upon arrival at the Midre Cummings Park, officers found the victim with a gunshot wound to the leg. Emergency Medical Services personnel stationed at the Village were summoned to treat the injury, and the victim was transported to the Juan F. Luis Hospital & Medical Center for further treatment, Mr Derima said.

Detectives are investigating witness statements that this incident may be a result of a self-inflicted injury.

The case is under investigation. The VIPD is asking anyone with information on this matter to call 911, the Crime TipLine at (340) 778-4950, or contact Crime Stoppers USVI with an anonymous tip here.
