The organisers of the Miss Virgin Gorda Easter Festival 2014 did a job that was pleasant to most of the patrons of the event, which was held at the Catholic Community Centre on the evening of April 12, 2014. There was not an empty seat as fans and supporters came out in their numbers to root for the contestant of their choice.
Lakiesha Claxton, Tecora Morgan, Shereen George and Shaila Stevens were the four contestants for this year’s pageant and as was evident they were well rehearsed to ensure a night of class for their fans and other supporters. Their entrance spelt their readiness for this years’ Emancipation Festivals and it was their costumes that spoke for them.
They were ushered in by the dancing troupes of VIGanzers, Moko Jumbies and others fully costumed dancers.
It was no easy task for the panel of five (5) judges as the contestants made it a tough competition. The introduction segment saw the four contestants depicting the true essence of beauty, talent and courage. Their introduction was almost flawless.
The expected 'oohs and ahhs' filled the auditorium as the four took to the stage in their swimwear. Up next was the ‘Sell VG’ segment where they did just that in a variety of ways. Contestant #1 had a storybook episode which spoke of Virgin Gorda, Contestant #2 sold VG with the Wheel of Fortune which spoke of Ms Grace Vanterpool after whom this year’s Easter Festiville has been named.
Contestant #3 with a recorded narration and her slender body clad in traditional wear spoke of the splendor of the island while contestant #4 started out with a recorded narration but then took to the microphone and with every string of boldness told her story of the VG experience that all visitors and those residing there enjoy.
The other segments were of the traditional features of the talent segment, elegant evening wear and question and answer.
The auditorium which was packed had among the audience Minister for Education and Culture Honourable Myron V. Walwyn, Sixth District Representative Honourable Alvera Maduro Caines, Chairman of the BVI Festivals and Fairs Committee Mr Marvin ‘MB’ Blyden, and several reigning queens of various pageants held across the VI.
