ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - It was the final day of the 6th Sitting of the 4th Session of the 3rd House of Assembly (HoA) last evening, Wednesday, January 23, 2019, as two members are retiring; outgoing Premier Dr. the Honourable D. Orlando Smith (AL) [1999-2019] and Hon Archibald C. Christian (AL) [2011-2019].

While many of the Legislators said their farewells and expressed thanks and well wishes, outgoing Member, Hon Christian also called on his colleagues to enact term limits for House members.

He noted that the USVI Governor has term limits, as well as the United States President and ask members to consider it as a tool of reform.

Hon Christian wept

Hon Christian, a former Junior Minister for Tourism who first won in 2011—after many attempts—and was re-elected in 2015 noted, “I think that once you continue indefinitely, things can, unfortunately go wrong. I am not casting any aspersions on anyone, but it is my own personal observations,” he warned.

At the end of his presentation, he also thanked his wife and two children at which time he began to cry.  It was an emotional evening, as other elected members had started to become choked up as they bid their colleague farewell.

It is unclear what will be Mr Christian's next move, however, some have suggested under the Progressive Virgin Islands Moment (PVIM) aka ‘NDP 2’, he could be considered for Speaker of the HoA.

Why should he have cried when he has accomplished his ultimate goal: staying in the house long enough to collect that lifetime pension. In fact they were probably tears cof joy when he considered the end result of his clever investment.
