ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - The most successful team in BVIAA track and field history returned home last night, Tuesday April 2, 2013, from the 42nd Carifta Games in the Bahamas to be greeted by dozens of parents, family, friends and fans all waving flags.

The Team that won 4 Silver and 4 bronze medals at the games to finish 5th in the final medal standings were also greeted by the Minister Responsible for Sport, Hon. Myron V. Walwyn and members of the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports

The Head Coach of the team was Steve Augustine and although tired after a long journey home, which was still not completed by a few of the team as they had to fly to Panama before reaching home due to Passport issues, he was full of praise for the team and the hard work they had put in.

“It went as well as we could have expected,” he said. “Expectations before the games were high and the kids definitely delivered and we are happy with their performance.”

As to his personal highlights, “I think every race, every medal won was a golden moment for us, but the 4 x 400 U-17 girls relay. We went in there against some really big countries and won the silver. We had Judine Lacey at 13 years old who anchored the race and what she did was truly spectacular, we were really happy with that and at the end of the meet everyone was on a high.”

He concluded by saying the team had left the games on a good note and that they were looking forward to doing even better in 2014 when the games will be held in Martinique.

There will also be another chance to celebrate the team’s success at a ceremony on Friday April 5, 2013 from 3 P.M. at The Breezeway of Central Administration Complex.

The medal winners were Eldred Henry (2) Tynelle Gumbs, Trevia Gumbs, Nelda Huggins, Tarika Moses, Lakeisha Warner and of course that 4 x 400m relay team of Moses, Warner, Huggins and Lacey.

What if we did not win any medals, but the athletes still had a good meet. Would Myron still meet them with all this fluff? Why did we send so many athletes when it was obviously clear that which athletes would be contending for medals, why don’t D.....and his crew set qualifying standards so that the kids learn to work towards goals. The way I see it, we could have sent a much smaller team and save. Now D... and his crew seeking more funding with their piss. D..., what you want to do? BROKE US. You have access to the major sponsorships around here, WHERE'S THE MONEY? Establish Standards and you see the funding is easy to come by. Just my 2 cents.

    A huge Big Up to:
Eldred Henry, Tynelle Gumbs, Trevia Gumbs, Nelda Huggins, Tarika Moses, Lakeisha Warner and the 4 x 400m relay team of Moses, Warner, Huggins and Lacey.

I believe that the Ministry and coaches did the right thing when they sent the team, notwithstanding that all might not have received medals. Exposure to regional and international meets is very much a facet of the learning experience for our athletes. They now know how much harder they have to work to bring themselves to the level where they will be serious contenders for medals. Our athletes have done well, coming from a very small territory!

Congratulations to the entire team, including the coaches and chaperones! You have all made us very proud!

This is really encouraging, VI Track&Field should be excited about its future. 5th over, as far as I am concern is great especially if you compare the size of the countries that placed above the VI.

the government is not doing enough for the kid especially when it comes to track and field. 1 to much boss on the track 2 too much confusion on the track so the kids cant concentrate on what they have to do.
