ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – The territory’s U-17 basketball squad departs today, Monday August 12, 2013 for the U-17 Centro Baskets Challenge in Gurabo, Puerto Rico.

The head coach is Brian 'Bash' Brewley who said practice sessions have been exhausting but have gone well. “The Boys are ready and have played some practice matches to make sure they could execute our plans under some pressure. We still have things to work on and being a small fish in a big pond also puts us at a disadvantage, but we are confident.”

The draw for the Tournament, which runs until August 18, was held earlier this year at the office of the Federation of Basketball of Puerto Rico in San Juan with the Athletic Director of FIBA Americas, Anibal Garcia, in charge.

Group A: Dominican Republic, British Virgin Islands, El Salvador and Mexico

Group B: Bahamas, United States Virgin Islands, Costa Rica and Puerto Rico

The finalists and the 3rd placed team will qualify for the 2014 FIBA Americas U-18 Championship.

Representing the Territory are Neville Smith Junior, Aldric Thomas, Stephon Caul, Franklyn Penn Junior, Nathan Rodney, Terique Wattley, Requan Fahie, Glenal Layne, Jamoi Dore, Colen Corea and Kimron Telemaque.

The head coach is Mr Brewley with Kennedy Bass and Trevor 'West' Stevens as Assistant Coaches.

Sharlene Hill is the Team Manager.

The trip has been made possible with the help of the BVI Basketball Federation (BVIBF) and also the BVI Olympic Committee (BVIOC).
