ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Raheem “Ras” Taylor and Niayla Smith led home 129 runners who had gathered on Campus to support the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College-Highland Spring Race for a Cause on Saturday November 12, 2011.

Several schools, service organisations, churches and sports clubs, turned out to support the fundraising drive to support the fight against Diabetes, including the Ladies of SASS, Rotary of Tortola, Rotary of Road Town and Rotary Interact, St. Georges Primary School, Althea Scatliffe Primary, Willard Wheatley Primary, Joyce Samuel Primary, Cedar School and Cedar Parents, First Impressions Child Care Centre and Elmore Stoutt High, Church of God of Holiness and Christian Faith Assembly, Cavaliers Cricket Club, Fast Lane Track Club and Sprint Tech Track Club and the Financial Services Commission and HLSCC.

In the Caribbean, about 20 percent of the total population is affected with diabetes, while in the Virgin Islands, the figure is around 15 percent. However, both these percentages are likely higher in reality, according to Public Relations Officer of the Diabetes Association Sasha Lake.

Vice President of HLSCC Dr. Anne Monroe, speaking after the race, thanked all the participants for supporting the event, as well as for their financial contributions. Also giving brief remarks was President of the BVI Diabetes Association Bennet Smith, who said he was pleased to be involved in the fundraising drive in association with the College and with support from the wider community.

The race, which was not a competitive one as far as the overall results for the series are concerned, was won by Raheem Taylor and Nyala Smith in the men’s and women’s categories respectively. It was the second of two races planned by HLSCC this year to help raise funds to support the fight against diabetes, a chronic disease which affects some 346 million people around the world.

The first “Race for a Cause” was held on Saturday October 29, 2011 at the College’s Virgin Gorda Centre in partnership with the Virgin Gorda Diabetes Association and the Valley Sound Lions Club. Last Saturday’s Tortola leg was held in collaboration with the BVI Diabetes Association.

The College will be accepting financial contributions toward the cause until the final race as part of the 2011 HLSCC-Highland Spring Series, which will be held on Saturday November 26. For more information, please call Race Director Stephanie Russ Penn, tel. 852-7216.
