Taxi operators to get second plate!
“We are looking at a policy that we are going to institute very shortly on the issue of issuing second plates to all taxi drivers. We are going to be heading in that direction,” the Minister said.
According to Vanterpool, the Ministry is waiting on the final recommendations from the Taxi Commission for the issuance of the new licences. “We are expecting to do that within the next month or so where we will come up with a new policy for issuing licenses.”
The implementation of the policy stemmed from a meeting Hon. Vanterpool and his staff had with taxi operators at the Noel Lloyd Positive Action Movement Park on January 9, 2012. The aim of that meeting was to determine the best way forward in assisting taxi operators with the challenges they face.
“The meeting was very useful for us. We were able to understand what they would like to see. We have put those thoughts into our thinking and we have done a couple of things, and we have come to the conclusion that we should issue two license plates for the drivers considering their line of work in the event that their one plate, taxi breaks down, they still can continue their work we are moving in that direction,” the Communications and Works Minister told this news agency.
Over 50 operators were in attendance at the January 9 meeting with several operators requesting that the policy of issuing two licenses to taxi operators be remedied as soon as possible.
“The law that is on the books right now that bar taxi drivers from receiving a second taxi plate must be revoked immediately. I am certain that I have the backing of most taxi drivers here this evening...allow two plates for each taxi drivers in the Virgin Islands,” one driver had stated.
