ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Three prominent Virgin Islands talk show hosts have roundly condemned Minister for Education and Culture Honourable Myron V. Walwyn for reckless statements he has been making in the House of Assembly.

The Minister at the last sitting alleged that the Chairman of Advance Marketing and Professional Services Julian Willock, the former Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Communications and Works, has been fired for "misconduct".

This was established to be an inaccurate statement on the part of the Minister.

Further, during a sitting of the House of Assembly some weeks ago, the Minister ventured upon a verbal tirade against former project developer of the cruise pier development project Hugh E. Darley.

We should be able to sue them also

Speaking to this news site, talk show host Donald E. de Castro said the government are the ones who passed the law allowing immunity to members of the House of Assembly.

"We should be able to talk about them without being sued for defamation of character also," he said.

He believes the Speaker of the House of Assembly needs to rein in members of the House of Assembly who attack persons under the cover of immunity.

"The Speaker of the House has a right to control the members who speak but she doesn't do it. Remember she works in his (Hon Walwyn's) law office so she's not doing her job. She's not going to shut him up...she's not going to call him to task," he said.

He said if the Speaker does not put a stop to that behaviour they are not likely to stop anytime soon.

"The Premier is a joke. He ain't gon say nothing," de Castro said.

Don't expect much

Talk show host Julio 'Sam' Henry said that much cannot be expected from the House of Assembly with the current Speaker in place.

"We can't expect the Speaker of the House of Assembly to be fair and balanced because she's biased and will continue to be biased and you can quote me on that," Henry said.

Henry recalled that when the cruise ship project was to have been debated in the House of Assembly the Speaker reprimanded the Opposition for pointing out that some of the partners in the development group had been bankrupt.

"She herself reprimanded them saying that they shouldn't be calling people's names and that they were using the cover of the House. So why is she allowing Honourable Walwyn to do the same thing?" he asked.

Hon Walwyn is a lawyer and ought to know better

Controversial radio talk show host Edmund G. Maduro asked whether the immunity enjoyed by members of the House of Assembly is so strong that they can defame the names of other persons without consequences.

"The Constitution gives every one of us freedom of expression and if that is the only protection he has then he could very well be taken to court," he said.

He said freedom of expression on the Constitution does not give anyone the right to abuse a person's rights. He said that the only person who is immune to having his duties looked into would be the Governor.

"This is the same Minister who got up and ridiculed what the Premier said regarding the cost of the fence for the Elmore Stoutt High School. As a Minister and member of the government he should have asked the Premier to clarify what he had said as he believed it to have been an error," he said.

He believes that Honourable Walwyn ought to have known better being a lawyer. "This man is a legal man...this man is a lawyer," he said, noting that immunity aside, the Minister can be put in jail like other persons for wrong doing in the House of Assembly.

While I am no fan of the Education minister I find it highly offensive for you to be labeling him Low class. I recognize this is a British Territory with majority black. It would be nice if you could clarify this "low class" status given the minister and also indicate the other low class person in the administration. I would like to know how many and by what standard you came to that conclusion. There are a few places in the world where caste is used to determine ones mobility/position in society. Please tell us what method was used to arrive at such a disgusting position.

Why them always on Myron? Lord help us! Our people are so hateful on their own people. When them catch themselves, they will ask, how did the Philipinoes, the Spanish, the Arabs, the whites and the island-people voted us out of our House of Assembly. They are one voting block. Take a page from the US 2008 and 2012 elections. Minority votes matter. Collectively, they are the top voting group. Talk, but you better start strategically planning the fate of these islands. Why all this hate and cutting down our own people?

The saga continues every week with My Run and it's very interesting. Did I miss something here? This individual is constantly being ridiculed and in my opinion has become the #1 target for both the public and the media. Since every book has two covers and every story has two sides, it would be nice to give him the benefit of the doubt and allow him to respond to his many accusers and the allegations made against him. Let's get on with it without delay.

Say what you want it is because of Hon Myron and Hon Mark is why the NDP won like it or hate it. The truth must be told. They are go getters they work to make things happen. They may not get it right at all times but they keep trying. I must give credit you don't have to agree this my opinion.
