DUFFS BOTTOM, Tortola, VI- It was no easy walk in the park in the Division finals of the Hon. Julian Fraser /Save the Seed National Intermediate League on Sunday October 20, 2013 but it was Talk Done and Avengers who were celebrating game one wins at the ended of the night of keen competition at the Save the Seed Energy Centre.

Talk Done outhustled Ruff House to a 96-89 points win while Avengers overcame a tough West Gunners 91-88.

Glenal Layne knocked down 19 points and grabbed an impressive 12 rebounds to lead Talk Done. Layne was supported by Kevon Lettsome (20), Romano Peters (12) and Clint Weston (10 points and 12 rebounds).

Coach Lennox Caines aka Coach Lennie said the team felt happy about the victory as they were able to execute their game plan. “The objective in this game was to run them hard as they had a small team, only seven guys on the team so we had to push the ball a lot, play aggressive defense and try to wear them down. It worked, they were tired in the 3rd and 4th quarters.”

Coach Lennie also said the strategy will remain the same for the second game. “We have a bench and we can rotate the players and wear the other team down.”

The Ruff House fight was led by Keshawn Fahie (20), Jeremy Telem (18), Roger Farrington (14) and Ashield Fahie (14).

Player Shamoy Dagou said his team just weren’t playing together. “We weren’t passing and boxing out.” Mr Dagou was nevertheless confident that his team will rebound in the next game. “We have to get out to a better start so we can relax coming down to the bottom of the game.”

The second division final was more of a keen contest with West Gunners fighting back from being 14 points down and levelling matters in the fourth quarter but were painstakingly edged out in the closing seconds.

Radley Stevens was brilliant for his 29 points and so was Shady Nadel, who scored 19 points while Jahreem Todman and Shaied Collins both contributed 12 points.

Avengers Coach Mike Meinhardt praised the West Gunners side, noting they were a well-coached team that play inside basketball.

“Quite frankly we were a little short on big guys today so we wanted to play our normal hustle defence and get out on the fast break. We got into some foul trouble down the stretch. We got two guys hurt but we hope to get them playing again because we have another game. The guys have a lot of heart,” Coach Meinhardt, who said he coached AAU basketball in the United States for a number of years, told Virgin Islands News Online.

Looking forward for game two this weekend, the experienced coach said “our offence is our defence. It’s simple as that. I would also like to see the players control their emotions some more. It’s a great league.”

West Gunners big man Kyle Abraham had a game high 35 points and 10 rebounds while Dashan Hodge registered 13 and Chad George and Franklin Fahie 10 apiece.

West Gunners Coach Irad Smith said he was still very proud of his team despite the defeat but lamented some referee decisions. “We had some officiating problems but we spoke about that before we went into the game and I said leave the referee alone but it is very hard…the refereeing was one sided,” Mr Smith alleged.

The coach also noted that the team also had some issues on their won to deal with. “We didn’t make some of the crucial free throws.”

Looking forward to game 2, Mr Smith said, “After being down 14 points and coming back right in the 4th quarter, I mean we really have a chance in this league.”

Meanwhile, West Gunners had reached the final at the expense of Da 3rd who they closed out 88-80 on Friday, October 18, 2013. Talk Done eliminated Top Shottas 82-56.

Yea we down 1 but no excuses Gunners will be in the Arena for Game 2 Friday. Time to open our closets n drawers n pull out all de BELTS cause we coming to share Blows......West Massive we large we coming to support the Gunners........Hogga, Mouse, Kami, Hull n de rest of the Team ayo LARGE!!!

mr. smith complaining bout referee virgin gorda he complaining save the seed i think he should be the referee if that goin make he feel any better cause his teams goin still lose in both leagues

  @ jus saying.. smith complain cause he needed to his team had like 20 team fouls or so not even at the first half and the next team had five the most in the first half.. and most a them fouls was not shooting foul everything the refree blew against the gunners... in that case in any basketball game it need to be level or let um play

    why u talk when hogga alone as fouling out the whole of avengers, nobody from west got foul out people from avengers was fouled out and almost everyone had 4 fouls. if they had win what would u say.

Check the stat sheets before u come on here talking trash. I'm not saying Gunners would have won but in the 1st Half alone they had 17 fouls on the fouls sheet compared to Avengers 4.........Ask urself is avengers defense that great that only 4 fouls they committed in a whole half (20 minutes)?? Smith probably complain a bit yes but given the stats he had a right to. if the fouls were more balance out like gunners 17 n avengers 10 atleast then u could say patience but 17 to 4 come on thats tooooo obvious.

Crazy how much people from east end travel to play ball down there. That's a good look. Everybody clings to a community vs community action. Maybe that's what missing in town but do not blame who running the league blame the teams.
