LEVERICK BAY, Virgin Gorda, VI - Excitement is building throughout the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and the United States Virgin Islands for the 2017 Leverick Bay Poker Run, that is billed as a charity event.

Residents with small, medium size and the big cats are gearing up for what has become one of the most anticipated boating activity between the greater Virgin Islands (VI) and Puerto Rico.

This Sunday May 28, 2017, the VI sea lanes will be covered with boats and people, as not even the fishes swimming will have space as the big roaring powerful boat engines will be sure to send them deep under water.

What time does it starts?

This Sunday everything will start with the sound of boats coming into Leverick Bay, Virgin Gorda around 7:00 a.m. and the excitement will continue to build up as participants gather at the Leverick Bay Marina.

How does it work?

According to organizers, registration will begin at 8:00 a.m. where boaters will be able to purchase at least one "hand" per boat (a hand is a wristband that allows entrance into each stop, and at each stop, participants pick up a card for the game). Each wristband will have a unique number that will match the selected card at each stop (meaning there is no way to cheat). In addition, boaters will also receive a participating sticker for each vessel with a registration number.

The cost of a hand is $250 dollars, according to the Poker Run Leverick Bay Committee. Buying a hand means that you, as an individual, will be participating officially and have the chance of winning big cash prizes by obtaining the best poker hand possible. Purchasing a hand will also provide boaters the opportunity to receive a raffle ticket to increase their chances of winning other prizes that add up to over $10,000.

The Poker Run organizers stated that at 10:15 a.m., the first card is selected at random (only by those who purchased a hand and who are participating officially).

Where are the stops?

The official start of the run is at 11:00 a.m. with the 1st Stop/Card at Trellis Bay, Tortola, 2nd Stop/Card Foxy's Taboo, Jost van Dyke, 3rd Stop/Card Scaramouche Restaurant, Tortola, 4th Stop/Card, Pirates Bight, Norman Island and the 5th Stop/Finish Line, at Tortola Pier Park, Tortola

All Boats are expected to be back at Leverick Bay, Virgin Gorda by 5:30 p.m. when the prizes will be announced.

As it has been for the past years many of the stops will have live music, and  lots of fun people cheering the event and, of course, many surprises and chances to win cash prizes, according to information obtained from organizers.  There will also be private ferry companies taking residents out to witness the 2017 highly anticipated poker run which started back in 2002 by Nick Willis.

I agreed. Its our politicians that making rules to keep us down. As a young musician in a band. We can't set up and play without a noise permit because another colour up in the hill complaining.. The Pub was our best liming spot. Laws kill it. Killing us. Because someone of a different color in the hills complained... The laws are made by our black brothers and sisters politicians to favor the different colour. We need politicians that change the laws back in our favor and appreciate us more.

How come we can't get pari mutuel and/or legal cock fights..... but we can gamble poker on our high seas??....Isn't that considered gambling??....or is it not because Government, Tourist Board and The White Man are officially involved?????
Majority of the cruise ships that visit our Territory stay for a few hours rather than overnight because of our 'no gambling' policy. Yet for one day a year every and anybody can pay $250.00 and play a hand in the Poker Run.
Don't get me wrong; I am an avid boater and enjoy the Poker Run myself; I'm just seeking clarification on this issue.

Sounds like a good day for a walk in Sage Mountain rain forest.....a bunch of throttle jockeys without any clue of the rules of the road.

Maybe the organizers should have a brief quiz for each captain to complete at registration on basic rules of the road. Having done the event last year , I can assure you that MANY have no clue.

The government/Tourist Board not involve thats why its successful. ST Martin and USVI Government put up
real money into their events. Ours was a drip from pot. very shameful for such a huge event. Compare to Music
fest large amount of tax payers money spent, nothing to show for it, BVI Spring Regatta Tourist Board headline
with taxpayers money, which charity gets what? did I miss it? I don't recall. Organizers please keep Government
    away from this event.
