Sugar Boyz are Virgin Gorda Cup Champions!
Playing 'down the hill' in the first half, the Boyz dominated the possession, but created few clear cut chances with perhaps skipper, Derol Redhead, being guilty of the worst miss. He latched on to a poor clearance, only to slice his rushed shot wide of the target from 12 yards out.
Jovan Wallace and Jario Morris also lacked a little composure in front of goal and as the first half wore on One Love, who had struggled to get into the game playing uphill, began to get a foothold on the match.
The Sugar Boyz defence though, marshaled by Maxford Pipe, remained firm restricting One Love to long range efforts. Richard Morgan was surprisingly off target with a couple of shots and a halfhearted penalty shout also went unanswered by the referee.
At half time, the Sugar Boyz regrouped as perhaps the happier team and realized they had to show more patience on the ball. One Love, though, were also contented to have survived the first half and had high hopes now that they had the slope in their favour.
However, it was the Sugar Boyz who broke the deadlock when One Love conceded a penalty within 5 minutes of the re-start.
It was a soft hand ball and an easy decision for the referee. Redhead smashed home from the spot.
The lead was doubled in the 7th minute when Wallace broke down the right hand side and found Jeunick Mingo unmarked in the “box”. Mingo took a touch and crashed the ball home via the underside of the bar.
One Love, though, got back into the game and set up a pulsating last 10 minutes when Morgan reacted first to a lofted through ball, to get his head on the bouncing ball ahead of the ‘keeper’, Leslie Ambrose and guide the ball into the empty net.
In truth though there were few scares or chances for One Love to score an equalizer and as time ran out the dancing and celebration of a “home” victory began.
“It’s marvelous, just marvelous,” exclaimed Redhead at the final whistle. “We have been training very hard, we came out to play our best and give the crowd something to cheer about. We regrouped at half time, decided to slow the game down and pass the ball out wide to get in behind them and it worked. It’s a good victory and we are looking forward to the next tournament.”
One Love Manager, Marc Savage acknowledged the better team had won on the day but said One Love could have played better themselves. “We were trying to conserve our energy in the first half and then play more in the second with the slope. We were lacking control and didn’t capitalize on the few chances we had, but on the day, although we worked hard, the better team won.”
