Students & parents fear retaliation from expelled ESHS students

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – With seven students recently expelled from the Elmore Stoutt High School (ESHS), there have now been fears of angry retaliation by some of the expelled (one name called) as parents and students said there have been talks in circles about plots to get at some teachers and students.

This was expressed to Virgin Islands News Online by several students and one parent of the ESHS. “They going come back at the school or even at UPs and them places to get at some of us and I am very frightened and don’t know what to do,” said one student who has chosen not to be named.

According to one teenaged female student, with the students being expelled there is now more room for them to be dressed casual, be around and to create problems on the outside of the school.

“It got some who presumptuous enough to wait right there at the gate for certain students to get out and to start a fight and I know they are not going to come unarmed because they angry and they would be looking to take advantage of people,” she said.

The students said they are planning to have an audience with the Principal (ag) Mr Wade W. Tobin to discuss their fears in the hope that a number of things are done, including tightening security at the gates, that there is a better collaboration with the school and the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force, that the Minister for Education and Culture Honourable Myron V. Walwyn take into consideration many suggestions that were allegedly put to him by teachers during recent meetings, that the school can foster meetings with some of the main eating houses where students frequent to have them tighten security at their businesses.

One parent said he is considering removing his children from the Elmore Stoutt High School and leaving the country because as much as he is fearful of violent retaliations, his children are too. “Look, I am so far contemplating migrating because I cannot understand what it going on with discipline at Elmore Stoutt. Everyday my children come home is something new and it’s not getting better,” he said.

According to the parent, moving his children to another school in the territory would not yield much results. “Parents need to grab hold of their animals. If they made mistakes in bringing them up the right way others should not be made to suffer, some of them are nothing but outright wild animals,” he said.

The parent said he totally agrees with the decision to expel the students and said he found it unacceptable of the Minister for Education and Culture to rise in the House of Assembly to say that he personally was not for the expelling of the errant children.

“A child would go the extreme of disrespecting the head teacher of the school with profanity, violence and all that and you as the Education Minister would say such a thing in the open. That is beastly,” said the parent.

The same parent said the Parent Teachers’ Association also needs to be more proactive and strong. “Zoe was just put there and I think they put her there at a time when it’s critical to have a strong president. I am confident that she can do really good things but us as parents have to be with her,” he noted.

Noting that he is not a politician and does not look at any of the Government Ministers and Members of the Opposition Virgin Islands Party (VIP) from a party stand point, he is extremely concerned about the manner in which the Education Minister handles matters of education especially when it comes to dealing with the teachers.

“I am the kind of person who calls a spade a spade and I really don’t like the path Mr Walwyn goes about matters,” the parent stated.

I cannot believe what has happened to our Islands. I cry for our forefathers who have striven so hard for us to be free and this is the respect we give them, for all the beatings they took for us. I cry for the young children who will never understand what sacrifices were made for them to come this far, only to throw it all away. I cry for the parents who never were educated enough to teach their children because they were never taught. I cry for all the disease spreading throughout the land, the hatred, the murders, the disrespect. I cry, I cry, I cry...for my poor B.V.I.

Have you heard the parents side of the story? Have you heard from the kids who were expelled? Don't just take the principals word as gold. There are some other key factors to be considered.[

There is no side of any story that i could want to hear from any child or parent that would justify a child getting violent towards the principal of a school. When i was was a child as vex as i could get to burst..i couldn't so much as slam the door to my room because my parents would follow me right in there and give me exactly what i looking for...

I agree with the parents in the story...i dont have a child old enough to attend high school yet but i am seriously considering not sending my child in there.. I just did a walk through of high school one day and i honestly swear i was in a third world prison..the children just running wild like wild boars and i could not believe that was high school...is either the children going in to young or they aren't being prepped for it properly from primary school or some parent seriously need to hang up their mantle because they are EPIC FAILURES!

Sometimes you need sombody on the street, that they feel they can relate to to guide them in the right direction, a man that is probally known for his toublesome youthful days that made a complete turn around that can relate to what the young people are going through.

How very foolish of you? The Education system has not become a "hot mess" under Mr. Walwyn. Many of you are out there with your political axe to grind and can't see that the real problem is not just the children but many of us parents. Most of these unruly children are mirror images of their parents who behave no better. Many of you are contributing to the lawlessness of society with your silly comments and foolish antics. The children are watching and learning then when they reproduce the same savage behavior everybody wonders what went wrong. It's people like you who are responsible for the degenerate behavior and the decay of our society.

Bull Crap! The education system had more children failing under Fahie and his crew. Myron has made the system better. These children acting up are just hard heads who don't want to learn and are distracting the one's who do. My daughter said she wish the parents would take care of their children better because they are rude, disrespectful to each other and make fun of the ones who do want to learn. She stated she will be gad to go to college, at least they are there to better themselves. It is not Myron's fault the parents don't do their jobs at home because if they did, their children would NOT be acting like this...enough said.

Some of these children in school for over 5 years....not behaving... Not going to class....teachers can't talk to them, so disrespectful. The principal did them a favour. They can now go learn a trade, earn some money.
The minister should not have said it the way he did. Just need to re-phrase his statement. No teacher nor the principal want to see any child expelled but truth be told it was necessary.
I hope it sends a strong message to the others who feel they run things on the campus.
Hope they sit down and think about it and change their ways

I pray for the Min of Education, principal and staff of the ESHS and the students and parents in Jesus name. AMEN!!

The man sent home the kids, he held meetings with teachers and concerned parties in a timely manner. What the hell you want from the man? He must take joy in sending home children really? He must crack a smile while doing it and express how willing and eager he is to expel children indiscriminately? Pure idiocy with you people I swear!!!!

So what are some parents trying to say? Let those children, who chose to, run loose and cause havoc in the school on a regular basis without expelling them? The point is children, with their unruly behaviour cannot stay in an environment where there are those who want to learn and want an education. The students were given chances to change their attitudes and their behaviour, and they chose not to. THEY HAD TO GO! So now, they want to intimidate people with fear of retaliation. So this is how we will want to live by letting some juveniles who cannot get their own way cause fear in this society. Is this the direction we want things to turn? I think not! "Stand for something or you'll fall for anything!" ... And I do believe that this is a good thing for us to stand and fight in unity against; violence in the schools. Do we as parents practice at home to give our children their own way when they act up because we say, "no"? I think not.....so why start now? All bad men and women, including the forced riped ones are eventually cut down to size.....sooner or later, if they refuse to listen to wisdom.

@ Stand up - You could not have said it any clearer! We must put our foot down because if we don't the chaos in ESHS will get worst. If these young men think they are grown and don't need to take orders from teachers or the principal then its time for them to find their way.

The sad thing is - they are not prepared for the real world. This might be awake up call for some and for the others whose light bulb does not turn on will be a menace to society.

Parents I admonish you to bend the tree limbs while its young. The bible say spare not the rod and spoil the child. Today, children are controlling parents. Parents stand up and whip these kids any to order before its too late. I did not say to abuse them. Use common sense and wisdom.

Ps what does this have to do with ESHS, or is it just another jibe at UK Officers.

Wow. I suggest they have a Primary and Senior high school. where the older children go and the younger children are not influenced by them. Then have teachers specially trained for the seniors. they had to be expelled. If you stand for nothing you will fall for anything. if that wasnt done rules would mean nothing to these children. They would continue to commit crimes and grow up thinking that they are above the law. My only question is why were they at the school still and why it took so long for these actions. now they were all expelled giving them the strenght as a group to do whatever they want in the name of injustice.

Let me first commend the principal of Her Majesty's Elmore Stoutt High School,Mr.Wade Tobin, for his standard of discipline expressed upon these students who were expelled.

I am sure, that pursuant to the education ordinance of the BVI law, rules and policies were derived to implement systems to discipline students:

Mr Tobin has made history,to deal with unruliness in the BVI high school.

Her Majesty, will be pleased with his decision!

You know it is such a shame that our kids have to be behaving in this manner. One of the things I've always said is that measures need to be put in place to perhaps scare these kids straight. For example the Government need to have a program in place whereby these deliquent children can be put into a prison cell for half a day so they can feel what it truly feels like to have their freedom taken away or, they can be taken to prison and let those "reformed" prisoners speak to them regarding what it's like to be locked up behind bars like what they do on some of those talk shows like Maury. If we do not change the mindset of some of our youths, the BVI will be going further into hell in a handbasket. Too many black men behind bars! As Parents we need to curb bad behavior from home. The Bible teaches us how to raise our children but a lot of times we as parents even if we are spritually-minded we are not teaching our children "The Word of God", and we're not teaching them that every action good or bad has a consequence. My opinion is is that if you're able to do the Act, by all means you should be able to face the Consequences of your Actions. Plain and simple.
