ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – More than 500 students from various schools around the Territory participated in a day tour of the Sister Islands by boat yesterday, July 26, 2013 as part of an annual summer Youth Development Programme sponsored by the Department of Youth Affairs and Sport under the Ministry of Education and Culture.

Students were allowed to view the sister islands of Virgin Gorda, Peter Island, Scrub Island and Salt Island from three ferry vessels before disembarking to have lunch on Salt Island.

The field trip, which lasted from 10 A.M.-3 P.M., was the second field trip held for this year’s summer programme. Participants in the programme are between the ages of 5-8 years old and were chaperoned by parents and school instructors for this year’s field trip.

The schools involved included Willard Wheatley Primary, Alexandrina Maduro Primary, Althea Scatliffe Primary, Enid Scatliffe pre-Primary, Leonora Delville Primary, Ebenezer Thomas Primary and Bregado Flax Educational Centre’s Primary Division.

This year’s programme also featured training in visual arts and cookery at the Elmore Stoutt High School in addition to the Junior Scientists programme. The Youth Development Programme runs from July 8-31, 2013 and wraps up with a closing ceremony at the Noel Lloyd Positive Action Movement Park.

Sounds like you aren't a part of your school. How mant other programs will your child miss out on because no one comes to your doorstep to tell. Look around and find out what is going on.Or do you expect gub'mint to do that for you too?

The programme had nothing to do with individual schools. Interested parents registered their children at the Department of Youth Affairs and Sport, paid $50, and indicated which programme they wanted their children to participate in. Programmes included arts and craft, cooking, sports etc. The different programmes were based at various venues such as the softball field, ESHS, Althea Scatliffe Primary, etc. This programme has been held every summer for many years, and is well advertised -- my children participate every year.
