ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – This morning April 26, 2012, a student of the Enid Scatliffe Pre-Primary lost a piece of his finger when a door reportedly slammed into it at the school.

According to information reaching Virgin Islands News Online, the male student’s finger was severed about an inch from the tip of the nail. He was treated and released from the Peebles Hospital this afternoon.

When Virgin Islands News Online contacted Ms. Valerie Welsh, Principal of the Pre-Primary school, she said it was an accident.

The Principal said students do have accidents everyday but the teachers do their best to ensure that they are safe.

“We attend to the children, we care for them as much as we could and we try to monitor them,” Ms. Welsh said.

Efforts to get a comment from the Ministry of Education on the issue up to publication time were futile.

And if he get involved with that you will ask why he don't let the principals do their jobs. With people like you there's no sense of reason. You have the right screen name because that's what you talking!

I think the school should atleast have something to hold the door because this NONSENSE could have been prevented. I've seen that preschools has cords holding there doors because they anticipate if a moment like this could happen. That poor child whole finger could have come off! What would the government have to say about this incident....... Who To Blame?

Why sue? This could have hapnd to the child getting into his parents' vehicle as well, or maybe a door at home.. Accidents hapn everyday, could have been worse, thank God it's not.

Why sue? Here is why. CARELESSNESS, that's why. Besides, Ocean Conversion sued and won, and Government is not going to challenge the $5 million awarded. So why can't this poor kid who will live the rest of his life hiding his hand, and feeling sorry for himself get $5 million too?

I wonder if this same child has squeezed its finger in the doors of his parents home or vehicle, it would have made the news. It would have just been called an accident. Because it was done in the school its news for the territory. Just ridiculous!!!!

Wow, so sorry to hear this. I pray for his speedy recovery and hope that he gets all the assistance warranted to help him through this ordeal. I'm a bit frazzled though, couldn't they have saved his finger and re-attach it?
