ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Hampered by injury in the last few events, Bethune-Cookman Jr. Keron Stoute still became just the second VI athlete to surpass 6000 points on his way to a winning total of 6069 in the decathlon on Saturday March 16, 2013 at the Miami Hurricanes Invitational in Florida.

In becoming the second athlete from the Virgin Islands to crack the 6000 points barrier, he had a 3473 points total at the end of Day 1 and won five of the 10 events. These included the 100m in 11.14 seconds; Long Jump, 6.62m (21’8¾”); High Jump, 1.94, (6’4¼”); 110m Hurdles, 15.91 and the Javelin Throw, 47.02m (154’3”).

His effort was just short of the National Record here of 6609 held by Paul “On The Ball” Hewlett.

“The sole purpose was to qualify for conference,” stated Stoute, who improved his best from 5958. “My ankle and knee gave away early in the competition so I just had to finish to get a mark in for the MEAC Conference. I have a lot left in the tank. My 400 was weak mostly because of my injuries and I also did not have a good day in the Shot and the High Jump,” he explained. “I honestly feel once I'm healthy again I can contend for the National Record. If I can get my Pole Vault and Discus Throw together, I should be able to be in contention for Nationals.”

Also at the Hurricanes Invitational, Tahesia Harrigan-Scott made her 2013 season debut with a 400m personal best. Harrigan-Scott lowered her 5-year old mark of 55.60 seconds to 55.33, to place third overall. She returned to action on the second leg of the 4x400m relay, splitting 54.22 on her carry.

Elsewhere over the weekend, Portland State Vikings Sr. Dominique Maloney opened her outdoor 200/400m campaign with her fastest debuts ever and beat Karene King in the process over 200m.

Maloney placed third in Saturday’s Oregon Preview 400m covering the quarter mile in 55.79 seconds. She has an outdoor best of 55.32 from the Big sky Conference last May. Later in the meet, she returned to notch her first victory over King in the 200m with a winning time of 24.46 seconds to King’s 24.49 aided by a +2.3 mps wind.

Morgan State Sr. Britney Wattley was second in heat 10 of the 100m in the Shamrock Invitational in South Carolina in a non-advancing 12.50 seconds into a -2.4 wind. She recorded a time of 1:00.39 in the 400m to place sixth in her heat.

Z’Niah Corea was third in the 2013 National Youth Indoor Championships 400m in the 11-12 Girls division with a time of 1 minute, 04.05 seconds. She finished fifth in the Long Jump with a leap of 4.58m (15’0½”) as the top six eclipsed the previous meet record. She was also fifth in the 800m in 2 minutes, 37.20 seconds.
