ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – One resident is of the belief that Virgin Islanders should be prepared to think internationally and not regionally in consideration of the services that the Territory offers.

The resident expressed on the Umoja radio show on July 4, 2013 that companies are invited into the Territory to do business and they are hiring locals so people needed to prepare to think like ‘them’.

“We’ve got to stop this mentality of ‘I from Tortola’,” he said, “that’s your right, but we have to show an attitude that we in our country can make our country better.” He advocated that persons coming to the Territory needed to help make it better as well.

He described the mentality of being ‘from here’ as a bad mentality because “the reality is, regardless of what happens we have to compete on that level,” he added. The resident further explained that the money is being brought into the Territory by persons who may not think like locals.

“We’ve got to understand how they’re thinking so that we can work with them, so when people come among us, they will want to respect us more,” the resident stated in reference to expatriate workers.

According to the resident, until VIslanders develop the necessary character and attitude the services being sold – financial services and tourism – would be affected negatively.

“We [have to] work with them and control our destiny so they can understand that when they come to us… they won’t try to control us but they have to learn to work with us.”

He described the situation using an old adage stating that expatriates would need to “do as Romans do when they are in Rome”. “When we do that we have to have the right attitude towards those people,” the resident said.

Host of the programme Natalio Wheatley aka Sowande Uhuru agreed with the points made by the resident and added that it was fine for companies to come and try to achieve the goals that they have but it was also necessary that people be factored into the equation.

I'm not so convinced! Thank God our elders thought of themselves and their people first before others or else we as a people would've been like so many in other Caribbean islands-landless, homeless and looking a place to live to earn a comfortable dollar!

While we should respect the contributions that many others have made here in our lands, we must always recognize, embrace and cherish that nationalistic "spirit" that gave us what we now have-freedom, land, and a place to forever call our own!!

Is the born here thing a heirachy like a class or caste system?
What do you say if you have BVIslander heritage and parentage but are born elsewhere?
Are you second class to born here BVI.
Is there a distinction between born St Thomas BVI, Born UK BVI. What is the Born here caste table like?

In other word your are saying your elders were selfisf, you don't know what to be proud about. People come here for different reasons. I am sure it's of the above suggestions.
All the young man is saying , times are changing and you need to move forward and stop living in the past. Also most of those old people worked outside of tortola to achive to things. Maybe you would have to some day, but with that mentality you would never be sucessful.

We as B.V.ISLANDERS have to preserve our little island,It's too small to share to outsiders. Why are these people fighting for rights here. What happen to the other islands e.g Jamaica, Trinidad, Antigua,Dominica,St.kitts and so on just to name a few. These islands are much bigger than us, and most of these people have nothing good to say about our island I guess they came for the u.s $$$$$$$ and our passport that give us freedom to travel with out a VISA.

you do need a visa to travel to the US on a BVI passport....You get a VISA WAIVER to travel only through St. Thomas....and if you don't come back through St. Thomas you will not be permitted to check-in for your flight until you get a visa!!! so don't b a MOO MOO!!!

Please note that you can return to BVI but you must leave from St. Thomas as the Visa Waiver initiative covers entry to the USA from a US port only. The only time you cannot use a Visa Waiver is on a cruise as once you leave the US port you cannot re-enter and will have to fly home from your cruise's last port of call before the ship returns to its US departure port.

I am an expat and I never came to this country expecting that the people of the BVI put my needs before those of their own people. I am grateful to be here and believe I can make a significant contribution. And when my time comes to leave I will be ready and appreciative of just the opportunity tonhave been here. I respect everyone, no matter where they're from. But in all honesty that's not as readily reciprocated here. I think if everyone just respected each other things would be alot easier for everyone.

See expats like you BVIslanders love. Just ask the people who migrated here back in the 70s and early 80s. They brought their respect for human kind and love for people with them so that we didn't even notice they were expats. We embraced them and thoroughly enjoyed their presence. But since this borne here child left and came back from school in the early 90s, I wondering where some of our visitors came from. I confess to being shocked when visiting businesses in Town and people cutting their eyes at me, someone they didn't even know. I believe that if you are going to relocate to another man's country, you should try to fit in, and the absolute worse way to do iso is to be scornful and insultive and call the natives dumb. What do you expect to be the result of that? You better be lucky we don't practice canibalism like some places in Africa, as we would have long had some of you for lunch.

"The resident further explained that the money is being brought into the Territory by persons who may not think like locals"

Well I never hear more. Such convoluted thinking, but let me take it point by point.

First off the only people BRINGING money into the territory is tourist. Unless you count those shady characters who bring suitcases of cash here to hide, and you can't count them because that money is not really "here" and does not circulate into the local economy. Everyone else comes here to MAKE money, not to BRING money. Got it? And when they come from abroad to MAKE money, where do you think that money GOES? That's right, it goes OUT of the territory, right back where the people came from, minus local operating costs (peanuts).

So once again, the only people BRINGING money is tourists. And when it comes to attracting and retaining tourists' money, nobody does it better than the BVI. We are one of the priciest tourist products on the market and yet we still retain such a faithful, even fanatical, client base that for decades workers have been flocking here from Jamaica, Trinidad, Anguilla, St. Lucia, in fact all the tourism destinations to come here and serve OUR tourists.

So tell me again what we are doing wrong. Make me understand because obviously I am ignorant. It seems to me that we should be MORE ourselves, more like the people, culture and destination that originally attracted these high-end, high-spend tourists who LOVE us, ALWAYS loved us just the way we are, love at first sight from the 60's til now.

Who else should we be emulating? The people who leave their country, culture and economy to come to our country, culture and economy to MAKE money off of OUR product (that product being US, our culture, our natural beauty, our tourism product)?

Boss, you're lost. Just like any investor, the idea is to make money and if you are in a country operating a business or investment that is not making you money, that is, you are loosing money, what do you think will happen? I'm hoping your smarty enough to figure that one out. See the writing on the wall, people loosing their jobs ever month, jobs been shipped overseas where it's cheaper and the environment is less hostile to investments, tourist and cries ship arrivals are down year over year, it's a tenants market for available apartments. You look. Other counties regarding tourism, cruise ship arrivals and passengers have improved yer over year. I'm sure we are in the same market and in the Caribbean.

Our ports needs major renovations and are years behind other islands such as Haven Sight - St Thomas, Port Zante - St Kitts and Antigua, to name a few....every capital project always goes over budget and takes twice as long......if those are signs of a prospering economy and your only defense is the US Dollar, you are lost.

We need to think internationally with business ideas. He young people should not feel that it's easy to get a 3 yard truck and say home till they get a job and being satisfied they are self employed. We need to be innovators that serve international and locals alike and it's called BVI made.....when we get to that level, that's when things will start moving in the right direction and the islands will prosper again.

You need to get out of Roadtown once in a while and see where the money is REALLY coming from, bout cruise ships. What cruise ships bring into this country other than a few dollars to the taximan them? I could tell you - NOTHING! They don't even self buy a drink off the boat, only nastying up the place for the REAL tourists, the resorts, the charter boats, that's where the real money is coming from. You can't compare us with St. Thomas or St. Kitts or even Antigua, our tourist product and our tourists are very different. Once again, here I am arguing with young green kids who have not seen much of life, here or anywhere else! Keep running behind fickle, cheap, nasty cruise ships pax and see where it gets yuh.
  • Bags packed (06/07/2013, 11:15) Like (15) Dislike (1) Reply
Quite correct that it is the tourists bringing the money, but even the hardcore longtime visitors are looking for greener pastures. The BVI experience has been going downhill for quite some time, ever since the cruise ships became the supposed cash cows of choice. Infrastructure has been neglected, service is an unknown commodity and quite frankly, the small children I watched grow up are now a bunch of angry, greedy 20 somethings who are not to be trusted. The BVI of days past is just a fond memory. The BVI of today is a nightmare in the making.

We are all from somewhere, and being from a country that represents less than one percent of the entire planet is something. The money in the suitcase does contribute to the economy of the BVI, as it greatly helps keep income taxes as low as they are. Per capita some of the lowest in the entire world, for a country that produces nothing, has no natural resource besides it people, who it keeps and allows to remain ignorant to the ways of the real world while they stuff their pockets and neoptize the system. The only ones that will suffer will be those that are stuck with the Born Here Mentality. That way if thinking, like all others who isolate themselves from reality. Eventually the world will not be able to hide it's money in the BVI and the Tax will rise, making all the Bonere's in their cars clogging up "nature's little secret" have to get off there disproportionately large posterior's and go back to the Donkey, and selling coal to their sister islands. Tourism will be the life bread of this small nation. IT will be then, that all the Born Here's will be forced to swallow their pride, forced to look up and smile with a beggers smirk, because they were not prepared for the future. Please don't forget......Natures Little Secret.... is Evolution (survival of the fittest)

If one say they are born here when they are beaning corrected for doing wrong such as braking the laws of the land or being corrected for some other wrong reasons which they fell they are justify to do because they born in Tortola that is also wrong. If they use the words "I born here" because they have been treated unfairly I say they have all right to say so because really and truly they cannot go in another man's country and get the first preference after all one should have rights in there own country.

Just like all the other countries you mention are proud to off their national colours every virgin islander should be proud to sing that song oh beautiful virgin islands and fly that B.V.I flag high on their cars, and homes, there is nothing like national pride. You dont have to use i born here to let others know where you are from. Flying that flag on your homes and vehicles will let the world know where you are from, and you will feel more virgin islander than thoes that are half and half, and making the whole Virgin Islands look and feel bad on the world stage.

And my parents and family go back generations to the 1700s so yes I am indigenous! And PROUD! Every other nationality quick to tell you where they from. They quick to say "back home we do this or we do that". They are proud of where they come from and proud to say it! Nothing is wrong with that. But the minute a BVI person says 3 little words "I bahn ya" then its a problem? If you insecure that's your problem not mine. But I from here and will keep sayingit! Sorry if it makes you feel a way. Saying 'i born here' really means nothing based on how it is used. If you born here and you are not prosperous then just stop. Most ppl who are saying that are.the same ones begging from the expats. The succcessful BVislanders dont use those words is only those who are fighting to survive. I have been living here for over 20 yrs and back then the ppl of the BVI were more friendly and kindhearted. The reason why this has changed as the younger folks that come in with their greed for money and that changed everything. The people have to now safeguard themselves.

So what? Only the rich and the prosperous have rights? You mean those who have been lost in the massive influx of foreigners must just shuffle off like a vagrant? Listen, the reason we are not as friendly, kindhearted and happy as we once were is because we have been taken advantage of. And we are tired of it now. A change is coming, watch and see. If a BVIslander can't get work in his home country, EVERY last expat needs to go home.

Starting with you would suit me just fine.

Man you talking bull. The guy didn't say only the rich have rights. The guy say that the people who have put some effort in to make something of their lives don't need to cry 'I born here' because they comfortable. Is the ones who expect everything to be given to them, every cop to let them go, every law to bend in their favor, the government to give them free land or a job for life regardless of how hard or well they work – those are the people this caller is complaining about.
Anyone of us can cry 'I born here' as much as we want. The caller is complaining about how some of us use it as an excuse for foolishness and laziness. Not all BVIslanders have that attitude, but in last 20 yrs or so it is our defining character and that is a sad, sad thing.
Those expats came here because we spent 30 years trying to 'develop' the BVI. You can't develop a nation with no resources if you don't allow outside capital and labour to come in and help develop it. That's what we did. Now we have house and SUV and all the damn trinkets we wanted in years back, but we want the people that comes with development to 'go home'? You crazy?
Fact of life: You can't have your cake and eat it. So step up and deal with the reality, don't use hate and xenophobia as a cheap way out.

If the island people didn't come here, the BVIslanders would be involve with their own family because everybody related and the BVI would have a lot of retarded people. Most of our parent are from down island so I don't see why make noise.

Well we been living fine before the expats. And guess what, "The expats aren't a problem in general, it's just the rude ones" Before all this development Tortola was peaceful, yes we want people to help us develop but the cost is alarming. TO ALL YOU GOOD PEOPLE THAT CAME TO OUR SHORES, WE LOVE YOU! To the rest GET LOST! To lose your moral and ethical standards ain't worth turning our little islands into Sodom and Gomorrah. Oh gosh, we done deh. When you come out of the ghettos don't bring the ghetto with you, leave the ghetto behavior behind and increase your worth. So many expats came here for a little peace and paradise not New York City, so we don't mind not being ahead in the concrete jungle. However, the new breed that are now here running some of their own people from our shores, WHAT A PITY!

If it is a great badge of honor and source of pride, then why are so many children of BVIslanders being born in St. Thomas, Peurto Rico or in the States? How many children of this generation carry multiple passports and therefore many citizenships? Just wondering......

this is what you all are not understanding. we are a people with a history. we have parents, grandparents, and great grandparents, etc. It is more than just being born in a place. It is the history and culture! Open up your mind!

And what is the problem if we grant our kids the flexibility of travel and rights by having them born in the US or other places? Old people say when you see a jackass you should ride it. If the US has slack laws and give away their rights and citizenship easily and we take advantage of it so what? We don't need to follow the US though. We need to protect our own tiny citizenship and rights. We have the best of both worlds. Don't hate us because other nationalities can't come and go freely into the US like we can. WE ARE BLESSED!

Now I see why St Thomas, St Croix and the rest dont like you all backside.when you stay on your computer and put those a$$ne$$ on here you think you doing your country good. I really believe more sooner than later you all are going to ride this donkey once again, take a close look at you all country and see the big change. just stop those nonesence and Tortola will be fine. I hope you all realize that Tortola is God's country and if you all dont change your ways, than he will do what he has to do.

Well that's the US law. If it were different we would have to abide by it and not say the people need to change their law. And getting their children in the US does not make a BVIslander less proud of the BVI. In addition we love our US neighbors, most of our families are there however, unlike the people who came here and hate the islands and the people. REALLYYYYY!

We carry as many passports as we like, 3, 4 or more depending upon who our parents are, who we marry, and sometimes yes, where we are born. The point is what business is it of yours? We have nothing to prove to anyone about pride or how to run our country, least of all these economic refugees like you who are flooding out shores.
