ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Although not having any scientific data to support his claim, a resident of Tortola has issued a challenge to young girls to not become sexually active at a young age as he claimed that is one of many reasons young girls are being diagnosed with cancer.

It was at the occasion of a health fair staged by the BVI Cancer Society in collaboration with CIBC FirstCaribbean International Bank on October 10, 2015 when the man, who asked to be referred to only as ‘Lenny’, stopped by the fair at the bank’s frontage to compliment the BVI Cancer Society for its work.

“I didn’t come with no money for nothing, and I not here to get no test done, I come for you all to teach and tell these young girls of today to not have sex at an early age.”

His explanation was that before 18-20 years a girl’s body is not properly developed and when engaging in sex it puts a strain on certain organs of their bodies, especially their uterus and breasts. “That’s serious and we have to do something to these men who take advantage of our young girls, sexing them up, and destroying them and they (men) move on with their life and the girls damaged for life. We got to castrate men like them, they can’t destroy the girl and they just get a light prison sentence, no,” insisted Lenny.

Cervical cancer linked to early sex

In December 2009 the International Agency for Research on Cancer published in the British Journal of Cancer that having sex at an early age can double the risk of developing cervical cancer. It had said that a study of 20,000 women suggested that.

The investigation into why poorer women have a higher risk of the disease found they tended to have sex about four years earlier than more affluent women.

Previously, it had been thought the disparity was the result of low screening uptake in poorer areas.

Study leader, Dr Silvia Franceschi, had said the findings were not restricted to adolescence and the risk of cervical cancer was also higher in women who had their first sexual intercourse at 20 rather than 25 years.

"In our study, poorer women had become sexually active on average four years earlier.

"So they may have also been infected with HPV earlier, giving the virus more time to produce the long sequence of events that are needed for cancer development."

‘Get the queens onboard’

Meanwhile, Lenny challenged the BVI Cancer Society to use the ‘queens’ of the territory to be mentors in schools and other social settings and to speak with their peers about how to conduct themselves. “The Rosanna [Chichester] girl, she with yall I know and she does a good job. Gloria [Fahie] and the others need to pull in the others, the Miss BVI and the other one from the queen show the other day (Miss World BVI Sasha O.E. Wintz).

Miss World BVI was present and actively participated in the health fair. When contacted she said she was very happy to join the BVI Cancer Society for International Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

“I want to thank Ms Gloria Fahie and the members of the society for their phenomenal work, all in an effort to educate our community about this disease. Today, because of their commitment, the number of women getting regular mammograms has dramatically increased,” said Ms Wintz.

She noted that she eagerly joined the fight with pleasure to serve the community. “This is also in line with the Miss World BVI Committee's mission to create a better BVI through its Beauty With A Purpose programme.”

“I would like to remind us all that cancer does not discriminate and this disease does not affect just those diagnosed with it, and not just those who've survived, but it is a disease that also affects those who love and know them. This is why we must all work together, as the 2015 theme says ‘Banding together for a cure’, to ensure that our community is informed, prepared and remains proactive in the fight against cancer.”

Ms Wintz noted that while her signature platform is working with less fortunate children she embraces the notion that queens should make good role models and be an inspiration to young girls of today’s society.

The BVI Cancer Society has a number of other awareness activities planned for the month, and Ms Wintz pledged her continued support even as she welcomes the entire community to do the same.

Assuming by your name used, that you are Vincentian, do you realize what a comment like that says of the men of your country, and especially at a time when many of your co- citizens are in trouble for acts of that nature?
I know that common sense is not that common, but my advice to you is to use the head on your shoulder to think.

A lot of young girls out here ruining them vessel before they turn 21.
Done got double digit body counts and naked pictures of themselves on the net.
Meen think you can catch Cancer from being sexual at a young age....but engaging in sex under 16 IS a Cancer and we should try our best to get these kids from jumping into this thing too soon and making life harder for themselves than it already is.

Actually, you can get cancer having sex at a young age. When you contract the HPV virus, which in turn can lead to cancer of the cervix, etc. Its all linked in some way or form. Young ladies need to wait, they will have their time.
