ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - For the third year, H. Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC) partnered with the community and the Valley Sound Lions in supporting the fight against breast cancer and by hosting the first pink race in Virgin Gorda on Saturday October 15, 2016.

This was the 2nd race of the 3- race series of the season under the new sponsorship of Mourant Ozannes, who have been named the presenting sponsor of the series by the exit of Highland Spring after 13 years.

At the races, participants sported pink attire, leis, pink balloons and were able to take advantage of free post-race health checks, including breast exams, provided by the Lions, with the assistance of Nurse Patricia Hanley, the HLSCC Campus Health Nurse.

On the competitive side of things, Reuben J. A. Stoby in a time of 10 minutes 31.65 seconds captured another win and remains the 2016 undefeated runner on both Virgin Gorda and Tortola.

Stoby once again threatened the over a decade old course record of 10:28.1, as he was just 3 seconds off.

He was followed by Julius Farley who ran 11:40.08, and Emrol Amsterdam who clocked 12:29.99 respectively.

Saungie Liburd’s, 13:51.56 and Rosmond Johnson’s 14:13.83 were more than good enough for first and second respectively overall for the women.

Battle of the schools

Sean Samuel of Robinson O’Neal Memorial Primary, running 17:06.25, had a strong showing in the Primary division, but the team effort of Ciboney School led by Eva Fox keeps them as the leader of that category. In the Secondary category, Bregado Flax’s, Harrigan House captured the win for race two followed by O’Neal House and Rhymer House in second and third respectively. This division continues to be strongly supported by athletes from Raw Skillz Track Club.

Races return to Paraquita Bay next Saturday October 22, 2016 for race 3 of the Tortola leg. All are encouraged to again wear pink as we continue to bring awareness to breast cancer. Registration for the race will be at 6:30 A.M. at the College’s Paraquita Bay campus. Races will start at 7: 00 A.M.
