PARAQUITA BAY, Tortola, VI- Road racing athletes Reuben J. A. Stoby and Rosmond Johnson began the defence of their College Classic Series titles with victories when the 21st edition of the series kicked off on Saturday September 17, 2016 with some 262 runners taking part.

Stoby ran unchallenged to victory, crossing the line in a time of 11:24.2, ahead of road racing rivals Julius Farley (and Guy Williamson, who finished second and third respectively.

“I was very pleased with how I was able to execute. I was able to pace myself quite nicely and didn’t need to work hard at any stage of the race,” said Stoby who ran undefeated in the series last year.

“I enjoy the two mile races as they are a good test of speed and endurance,” added Stoby who said he was pleased to see so many persons come out to participate.

Johnson (15:5.4) was able to stave off the challenge of Saungie Liburd to rebound from a disappointing 6th place finish in the Ceres 10K in Carrot Bay on September 10, 2016.

Sam Potgieter and Khadija Samson had record breaking starts in the boys and girls one mile races. Potgieter took down the long standing 2006 record of Trent Herbert in a time of six minutes 41.2 seconds while Samson broke 2015 champion A’keela McMaster’s record set in 2013 running a time of six minutes 54.2 seconds.

On the Cross country side while team Rotaract had a strong showing it was still not enough to beat the dominant Rotary of Tortola. Other winners included Cedar School PTA, Cedar Secondary and Joyce Samuel Primary in their division.

Next Saturday September 24, 2016 the series kicks off in Virgin Gorda. Registration for the race will be at 6:30 A.M. at the College’s Virgin Gorda Centre. Race will start at 7:00 A.M.
