Still no completion date known for QEII Park
Speaking during a press conference to announce activities by the government to mark Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on the occasion of her 90th birthday, the Premier was asked about the completion of the facility built in honour of Her Majesty and whether it would be a part of the celebrations.
“The Park is still a work in progress,” said Premier Smith in response. “I don't have an official date for its completion so that it could be opened,” he said.
The project is being executed under the Office of the Premier.
When pressed by the media as to whether it would be opened in time, Premier Smith said, “I cannot say at this time [as] I am still waiting on my officials to say when it would be complete.”
The Park remains unfinished even though it was revealed that Government spent $1 million on the facility. That sum reportedly included $200,00 for a water fountain.
Speaking at the opening of the expanded cruise pier at Tortola Pier Park on April 29, 2015, Premier Smith had said, “the Queen Elizabeth Park will be ready for enjoyment and relaxation by year’s end.”
Later, during a press conference Premier Smith said that the Park would have been opened by October 24, 2015 in time for the VI/USVI Friendship Day celebrations. However, this did not materialise and five months after, the Premier still cannot give a completion date.
