ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - In light of the negatives existing in the Virgin Islands, namely, an increase in criminal acts, drugs, possession of unlicensed firearms and abuse, Chairman of the Virgin Islands Heritage Month Committee, Rev. Dr. M. A Turnbull sa

Mr. Turnbull made these statements while addressing the public at the annual Emancipation Service at the Sunday Morning Well on August, 5 2012.

He said that as a Virgin Islander it is his duty to “commend, recommend and highlight the good in VI societies.” He added that if you do not have a true sense of identity and protect our freedom, we will soon slip back into slavery.

Rev. Turnbull informed the crowd that slavery still lurks amongst the people of the Virgin Islands, “it only changed its face, many people in the territory are still mentally enslaved.”

He said “when you are ashamed to say I’m a Virgin Islander and stand up, it suggests to me that you are ashamed of who you are.”

He recommended that persons advertise and make use of the recently chosen and passed territorial dresses at next year’s Emancipation Festival.

This is the kind of sentiments that need to be shared in our society. Thank you Dr. Turnbull.

Dem costumes do not do us any justice if I were to put that dress on and pull back my hair the world going call me Spanish. Those outfits don't give the world a clue as to who we are. The outfits at the prince and princess show are more in line to our culture rather than the chosen ones that mixes us up with spanish heritage.

People, everything in this world is interconnected......it sometimes takes a while to be aware of this, so try not to criticise Dr. Turnbull for his advice because religion is to serve people. It maybe his way of reminding the community that we are always under scrutiny even in the subtlest of instances. Lets keep the land of the BVI pure so it can continue to be a place where people are always proud of their heritage and homeland! His words of wisdom are food for thought............
