THE SETTLEMENT, Anegada, VI- Word just reaching our newsroom is that one of the Virgin Islands stalwart educators, Mrs Claudia Creque, whom the government school in Anegada is named after, has died.

This information was confirmed today, February 11, 2021, by Minister for Education, Culture, Youth Affairs, Fisheries and Agriculture, Dr the Honourable Natalio D. Wheatley (R7), who said he was saddened to learn of the passing of the stalwart educator, who he said dedicated forty-four years educating the people of Anegada.

Dr Wheatley wrote on his Facebook page that Mrs Creque’s career in education began in 1962 when she was appointed as a student-teacher at the Anegada School.

After her two year study at Teacher's Training College in Barbados, where she received her Teacher Education certificate, she returned to the Virgin Islands in 1974, where she was appointed Head Teacher and later Principal of the Anegada School, a position which she held for thirty consecutive years, until her retirement in 2004.

Creque’s work continued even after retirement

“Even after her retirement, she continued her service to her community, managing the new preschool, tutoring students who needed help, and playing a role in the affairs of Anegada,” Dr Wheatley stated.

The Anegada School was renamed the Claudia Creque Educational Centre in March 2008.

“I extend sincere condolences to her family, friends, the education fraternity, and the Anegada community.  While we mourn this great lady's passing, we celebrate her heroic contributions to the people of the Territory and, specifically, the people of Anegada. May her soul rest in eternal peace!”

The Management and Staff of Virgin Islands News Online extend sincere condolences to the family and friends of the late Claudia Creque, as well as the students and staff of Claudia Creque Educational Centre.
