ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Schools in both the private and public sectors were encouraged to participate in the observances of Education Week which concluded on Saturday March 15, 2014 and this encouragement was certainly heeded by the students and teachers of the St Georges Primary School.

The school held a science fair that was seen as very creative and which brought out the scientific side of its students. According to Principal Ms Claudette A. Llandover the fair brought out in practice what was learnt in theory.

Among the many pieces created at the hands of the students were a model of a tsunami, depiction of global warming, both done by students of class four; an illustration that dealt with natural resources done by class 2; a depiction of a water purifying system done by class three; while class one did a piece of an erupting volcano and one of the human body.

Ms Llandover said that those were just a few of the pieces done as most students did individual pieces. As for those done by the various classes the students were ably assisted by their class teacher as opposed to those done individually.

She indicated that the creations at the second annual science fair were in line with the theme for Education Week 2014 which was, “Literacy through the Arts”.

She said that they were keen on not making the science fair one of a competition as they wanted each child and class feel the appreciation for their efforts and skills displayed. The science fair coincided with the school’s open day where parents and other members of the community had the ample opportunity to view the handiwork of the children.

“Parents had the opportunity to also come in and interact with their children and teachers in the school environment so that added to the day’s success,” said Ms Llandover.

In addition to the science fair students of the school participated in a general knowledge quiz which was designed to bring out the significance of reading and listening especially to current affairs that are public via the many electronic and printed forms.

Tomorrow the school will close of their planned activities for Education Week 2014 with a book fair and sale as according to Ms Llandover, “We can never over emphasize the importance of reading.”
