ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – The St George's Primary School today March 18, 2016 held its annual Open Day and Book Fair with the focus being the usage of language to advance learning in all subject areas, including Mathematics and Science.

The school had on display numerous projects that the students themselves made to help bring the theme alive and which were able to give practical demonstrations of how concepts that seem complicated at first can be explained through language properly applied.

Science teacher Kim A. Stephens told this news site that the teaching of the subjects can become integrated so that the learning can be made easier, since not everyone learns at the same pace.

“We are taught that English is very important. Now English, along with Mathematics and Science, all of them can become integrated because many times when you are teaching Science and Mathematics children will believe it is in isolation and they should not believe that,” she said.

Ms Stephens said as a result of this observation the school decided to fuse the subjects to reinforce that English is essential throughout. “You can use it in Mathematics and make it fun, you can use it in Science and make it fun, so we use different strategies...we use creative writing skills, vocabulary and spelling skills and comprehension,” she said.

Activity to also boost comprehension/get parents involved- Principal

Principal of St George's Primary School Claudette A. Landover said the aim of the day's activity is to show the integrated approach the school has taken to teaching subjects such as Mathematics and Science.

“We are having our yearly open day. Usually we would have a science fair but this year we are focusing on language and reading and we are using the integrated approach to language and reading to show that language arts can be use to teach any subject,” she said.

Ms Landover said that all levels had items on display during the open day, from reception to grade 6.

She said that at the beginning of the school year the school did an assessment to see when were their strengths and weaknesses over the previous year and the decision was taken to go this route. “And one of the weaknesses that we found was in the area of comprehension. The exhibition is also meant to give the parents strategies how to help the children at home,” she said.

This is a good start to the “Multiple Intelligence Paradigm.” Now music, art and other subjects, if taught there, should be connected as well, for a “wholistic” approach to the most highly effective dimensional type of learning and critical thinking development, where all students can tap into their unique innate abilities and talents in which to learn. Kudos to you all at this school for embracing a different approach to effective learning and development of children in the Virgin Islands. This is an example of true Leadership.
