ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- On Wednesday, September 26, 2012, the Social Security Board (SSB) hosted a Kids Health Fair for its adoptees, the students of the Enid Scatliffe Pre-Primary School.

Under the theme, “A Healthy Future”, students gathered on the school grounds, which captured the ambiance of a colorful fair. As the children took to the grounds they were greeted with hugs and high fives from Kung Fu Panda and Freddy the firehouse dog, and the allure of the bouncy castle.

The fair incorporated educational, fun, interactive, and innovative programs that focused on healthy living, healthy eating, and physical activities. Exhibit booths included dental checkups, medical screenings for weight, height and temperature, hand washing and germ exhibit, fire safety and social development issues.

Exhibitors engaged the children in fun activities with information, demonstrations, give-a-ways, a puppet show, and other fun entertainment teaching ways of staying healthy and safe. Along with other handouts, each student received a child tooth brush kit, which will provide them with the tools for starting a lifelong pursuit of good oral health.

The highlight of the health fair was the Fruit Booth and the launching of Fruit and Water Day, an initiative of the Social Security Board. According to Deputy Director, Jeanette Scatliffe Boynes, the students of the Enid Scatliffe Pre-Primary School, along with their parents, are pledging only to eat fruits and drink water for their snack on Wednesdays. She said to promote success to the initiative; students and classes with the highest compliance will be entitled to win a prize at the end of the school term.

The Social Security Board intends to make the fair an annual event as they are cognizant of the fact that health awareness from a young age leads to healthy adults and fewer benefits claims.

As the fun filled afternoon progressed, the students were served with fruit kabobs and fruit cups sponsored by Road Town Wholesale.

Information handouts were sponsored by Summit Printing. The Social Security Board and students of the Enid Scatliffe Pre-Primary School expressed appreciation for their kind sponsorship.
