ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – The Department of Disaster Management (DDM) is advising that there could be squalls over the Virgin Islands this weekend as a result of the Disturbance 2 developing some distance from these shores and Information and Education Manager at the DDM Philomena N. Robertson said persons should prepare for this.

In a bulletin issued yesterday Tuesday August 26, 2014, the DDM said, “On the heels of weather system which brought heavy rainfall to the British Virgin Islands last week, forecasters are now monitoring a number of waves, notably Disturbance 2.”

“According to the National Hurricane Centre, at 2:00 p.m. [August 26, 2014], the tropical wave located about 850 miles east of the Lesser Antilles is producing disorganised showers and a few thunderstorms. Environmental conditions are not expected to be favourable for significant development during the next couple of days, but could become more conducive by the end of the week as the system moves westward to west-northwestward at about 15 mph,” it said.

“Whether or not the system develops further, forecasters have indicated that there is a potential for Disturbance 2 to produce squalls over the BVI on the weekend,” said the bulletin sent out by the DDM.

“Residents are reminded we are in a very active part of the 2014 Atlantic Hurricane Season and should continue to monitor the weather conditions as the number of tropical waves exiting the African Coast has increased,” it said.

“You would have seen from the update issued yesterday that the Disturbance was 850 miles east of Lesser Antilles so that is some distance away and the projected impact is sometime this weekend,” said Information and Education Manager at DDM Philomena N. Robertson in a comment to this news site today August 27, 2014. “So over the next couple of days we have to monitor the system and see how it develops. It is a bit early to say,” she said.

“However the forecasters are saying that regardless of how it develops we should expect some squalls Friday into Saturday,” said Robertson. She said that the conditions expected are going to be very windy with some rain, as it was during the Festival weekend some weeks ago.
