Spirit of our fathers needed in time of gloom & doom!

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- “Despite the gloom and doom being predicted by so many people here we should have that spirit of our fathers, that has guided us and led us through calamities, such as wars and the effects of the big depression in America in 1929, and disastrous hurricanes, and we survived,” remarked Opposition Leader Ralph T. O’Neal during a recent public address.

According to the former Premier, it has been reported that the world is in a serious financial situation although there were those during the recent election campaign who tried to make the people believe that the economic depression was not affecting the Territory. He, however, called on the Territory to understand that there were many challenges and that their patience was also needed

“We must recognize that everything cannot be done at one time and with the challenges that we face, and I am sure you have heard over the radio, television and other forms of communication, the serious financial situation the world is in, although during the campaign there were those who tried to fool you that the British Virgin Islands was not affected by the recession.”

Hon. O’Neal also noted that the Virgin Islands Party (VIP) Government did put in place some austerity measures and therefore did not have to lay off anyone nor reduce their salaries. This he hopes would continue.

“Listening to the news from places like Japan, China, Argentina, Europe, United States of America, etc. the forecast is that it would take some time to bring stability to the financial situation. We were able to accomplish some important projects that will help to improve the tourism product. One important achievement was the completion of the Heads of Term agreement with Disney Cruise Line, which hopefully will lead to a final agreement for the lengthening of the Cruise Ship dock and guaranteed cruise ship visits throughout the year.”

The Opposition Leader said listening to the speeches that were made on the day of the swearing in of the members of the Second House of Assembly, he would hope that those promises made would be carried out. “I pledge that I will do the best that I can to assist where possible.”
