ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – One resident is of the belief that Mr Augustin Popo’s death could have been avoided with the presence of a long awaited specialty hospital on the sister island of Virgin Gorda.

Chesney Stoddard, a guest host on the EGM show aired last week said a conversation with other persons in the Virgin Gorda Community led to the question, “Where is the specialty hospital that they’ve been asking for [for] donkey years?”

52 year old Augustin Popo, a national of St Lucia, met his death after suffering an injury to the throat while using a bladed grinder at a construction site in the Coppermine area on Virgin Gorda on March 20, 2014.

He was immediately transported to the Iris O’Neal Clinic afterwards, but attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful according to a Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) press release.

Popo’s death, Stoddard added, could have been avoided if the requested hospital or alternatively a trauma centre was made available to him following his mishap.

According to Stoddard, concerns about the hospital continue to linger even as another Virgin Gorda Festival has begun on the sister isle. He added that while everyone may see Mr Popo’s death as a tragedy, it is shocking to think that if proper medical care was available, his life might have been saved.

Host of the show, Edmund G. Maduro, said the Territory has now become a choice destination in the tourist industry and this makes such hospitals and clinics that can act in a similar capacity on the sister islands even more necessary.

Maduro said he is disappointed and very concerned that the Territory has not had a specialty hospital put in place in Virgin Gorda as yet.

As a BVIslander, I am always saying that I believe that there are people who are dying in our hospital whose lives could have been saved, if only we had the medical expertise, equipment etc. This, I realize can only result if the necessary funding is allocated to these areas as a priority. True, some persons have the privilege (medical insurance and access to funds) to seek further medical attention in PR or the US but we need to ensure that our services are strengthened and upgraded to save more lives. A hospital on Virgin Gorda is a priority which needs to be implemented like yesterday. In the meantime, the personnel and their capabilities at the clinic should be enhanced as much as possible and as soon as practicable.

They electing the same man for the last 30yrs and he spent most of those years as Chief and Premier, he did nothing. All of a sudden people realize what we need after they themselves help raid the chest. When cash was flush we did bulls..t with it, now we casting blame. All of us are to be blamed because we never call out the real culprits, just hide behind a computer and bash politicians as if we really care. If Government came out tomorrow and said no more bush cutting, no more private trucking, no more garbage collection contracts, no sidewalk painting, no guard rail painting, no petty contracts. Starting 2015, Government will be utilizing their departments to do ALL these works and will save the country over $30mil to go towards needed projects. How many would be in favor? You all will be first to jump up and say "JEESUS CHRIST DEM GON KILL THE POORR MAN".. But no problem if we kill the country. Go take a damn seat. Everybody know what's priority but still letters rolling in to Government from the same people, begging for all sorts of dumb s..t.

Trouble is, the "needed projects" that $30 mill would go towards would be nonsense cruise ship development, unwanted airport expansion and other assorted bu!!$hittery and guess who would get THOSE contracts? The fren and dem of the current govt. So you go take a dam seat bout petty contracts, you sharks just want to get rid of petty contracts so that you can roll them up into big contracts that make more of a tasty mouthful for your greedy guts!

I have said it before and I will say it again. Virgin Gorda has NO emergency cases, Virgin Gorda has DEATH cases. The response time will always result in DEATH. We may say whatever when something tragic happens, but it's just a matter of time and then someone else's turn and we repeat the same thing all over.

Where is the hospital the VIP promised? Bigger waste. Waste is waste. Stop blaming every party. None can or will do everything. A party can't do. Real individuals are who make things happen. Brainwashed people that never learn election after election.

How can we get the upgraded hospital/Trauma Center when our "Done Deal" Politicians continue to fly all over the D###m place (first class) looking for airport designers (a project that will never happen) ?

The same incident happened in NY a week after the accident occurred in BVI and that worker survived. The blade was not removed so it prevented the man from bleeding to death before getting to the hospital. The BVI people need to lobby the government to ensure that the proper infrastructure is put in place for well being of residents and also the increase visitor arrival. Need Medic helicopter and/or plane. the seas can be rough at times and prevent transporting of medical cases from our outer islands (VG, ANG, JVD) and of course our resort islands. Let us be wise.

There are wonderful nurses and a few good doctors that come to Virgin Gorda but the truth is, the only thing that they can perform is first aid. Anything past the common cold and "YOU ARE DEAD". Does this help to explain the situation that we are in on this little island?????????
