SPECIAL FEATURE: Chris-Tiann E. E. Roberts – STGSS student of the Month
She completed her full primary years in the St. George’s Primary Division. In her view, the St. George’s Pre-primary and Primary schools instilled in her an attitude of discipline. She says from the tender age of four, for example, “I was made to understand the importance of handing in homework every morning, completing projects, participating in debating activities, memorizing the Lord’s Prayer and the Apostle’s Creed and being well-mannered throughout the day.”
In 2012, Chris-Tiann successfully completed the Primary 5 Examination, ranking third (3rd) in the Territory. In that year, her St. George’s Primary graduating class took the top six (6) spots in the Territory’s Primary 5 Examination.
Being accustomed to the nurturing environment at St. George’s, Chris-Tiann naturally desired to attend the St. George’s Secondary Division. Although she knew that this desire would come with a financial strain, she convinced her parents that she would make the investment worth the while. Looking back over the years, Chris-Tiann is certain that she made the best choice because she has excelled at skills she never even considered trying.
For example, she is now very competent at Visual Arts and she has added the tenor saxophone to her musical repertoire, having formally received instructions in the piano and ballet since age five. At St. George’s she has also developed a passion for Spanish, Chemistry, Social Studies, Physics, Principles of Accounts, Principles of Business, Human and Social Biology, History, Information Technology, Physical Education and Geography.
Chris-Tiann is currently attaining grades in most of these subjects at the CXC level, along with English and Math. Given her passion for academics, her level of discipline and her faith in God, Chris-Tiann has been blessed by being placed on the Principal’s List (for students who achieved an average of 90% and above) for every term since Form One (1), including the Advent Term of 2014.
However, Chris-Tiann appreciates much more than the academics at St George’s Secondary; she appreciates all the other aspects such as dressing up in formal attire for the school’s annual Christmas Dinners with dancing, competing and placing in science fairs, group projects, representing the school at public speaking events and public engagements involving the ‘Muzik Lab’, modelling at school functions, taking part in the school’s talent competition, making new friends and, above all, being in an atmosphere of students caring and supporting each other.
Chris-Tiann says that, “Such experiences have and still are allowing me to overcome fears, build confidence and encourage me to continue working to my fullest potential. Likewise, the faculty’s enforcement and continuous reminders of qualities such as service to the community, respect, giving thanks to God and discipline help to shape myself and others morally as we live as strong individuals in our Virgin Islands society.”
Chris-Tiann immensely appreciates the love and support of her immediate and extended family. For example, every morning, since her first day at St. George’s Secondary, her grandmother says to her “Be a leader, not a follower”. Chris-Tiann has internalized this statement and she is determined to do exactly as her grandmother expects of her in any profession that she is fortunate to pursue.
Indeed, she simply aspires to be her best, with God’s help. At present, Chris-Tiann is having a hard time deciding exactly what her profession would be. One thing she knows for sure, however, is that with the St. George’s experience, her future is secure. Chris-Tiann’s sums up her life experiences and future aspirations in the mood of Psalms 116 verses 12-14 by saying, “I am tremendously thankful to God for all his benefits towards me.”
