SEA COWS' BAY, Tortola, VI – The pre-Festival races at Ellis Thomas Downs on Sunday 13, July 2014, was a quiet affair, with the late arrival of new horses detracting from the day’s excitement.

A 4 ½ Furlong race got the afternoon underway, in front of a small crowd, with Kayleen Wild Cat, owned by Karl Thomas and ridden by Antonio Porch, winning in a time of 58 and 2 ahead of Joshua and Man From the Hill.

“It’s his second run and he’s good,” stated Thomas. “He can only get better.”

The second race over 7 furlongs saw Good Boy Daddy lead from start to finish, winning in 1:36 and 1 from Power Ten, Orithyia got stuck in the gate and didn’t complete the race.

Lesmore Smith is the owner of Good Boy Daddy who was ridden by Kirwin John. “I know he would have won an easy race, his speed meant anyone else would be playing catch up,” said Smith.

Race 3 saw debutant, Southern Dunn, ridden by Michael Semple and owned by Karl Thomas romp to victory over 7 furlongs in a time of 1 34 and 2 , ahead of Miss Homer and True Essence.

“She arrived late (Friday), but she was prepared. We didn’t know anything about her form, but we raced her today in readiness for the big August Festival Races,” commented Thomas.

Race 4 also over 7 furlongs was won by Fort Pyramaid ahead of Buy Buy Buy who also suffered a hold up at the gate as Fort Pyramid got off to a flyer and eventually won by 4 lengths.

The winning time 1:32 and 4 and the Jockey was Kirwin John.

The day’s final race was won by Halo’s Midas Touch, ridden by John for his third win of the day, in 1:33 and 4.

Game keeper came second in the race over 7 furlongs with a purse of $3,000.

“When you win it’s always a pleasure, so a good day for me. All the horses I rode broke early and kept going and although the track was a bit heavy, they all ran well for me,” said John.

Why the big horses not running for August Tuesday?

Who will represent us in the premier cup when none of the new horses qualified? Uptown and town hall out with injuries, mileage big horse aint run yet, white head horse aint run yet, alex new horse aint reach yet, this will be a mess. The rules say that you have to be in the VI a month before the race and that you have to run in the bvi for the calender year. The big question is, will we bend the rules for these new horses because of who the owners are ????? Now we cannot exclude the usvi horses because of all this.

That is true. But we can always elect to don't have a Premier's Cup or change the class of horses running for it.
hmmmm what to do? what to do?

August Tuesday will be nice - more horses coming - Last year Plotter from St. Croix won the Premier's Cup & NEVER ran in the BVI. All rules should have clauses or wiggle room for the best interest of the sport. The best horses should run in the Premier's Cup. It will not make sense to shut out the new horses, remember they are the reason we have races. My 10 cents.
