ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- A white South African woman was granted bail in the sum of $50,000 when she appeared before Magistrate Ayana Baptiste-DaBreo today June 17, 2016.

Nicole Prinsloo was charged with the indictable offences of theft and false accounting and therefore was not required to plea.

As a condition of her bail, her passport, which now is in the custody of the Immigration Department, will be turned over to the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force.

In addition, she has to report to the Road Town Police Station every Wednesday between the hours of 6:00 am and 6:00 pm.

She is to return to court on October 6, 2016 for the commencement of her trial.

Charges

The court heard that the defendant, on a date between April 15, 2016 and May 15, 2016, collected monies on behalf of her employer of a real estate company in the sum of $750.

The court heard that a receipt bearing serial number 421007 was made out to the person making the payment.

Prinsloo allegedly failed to turn that money over to her employers or informed them that she had collected same.

When it was subsequently discovered that a receipt book could not be found, the virtual complainant asked the defendant about the receipt book and she denied knowledge of it.

However, according to the prosecution, she later told the virtual complainant that she would search her home for the receipt book, arousing suspicion. The court heard that she later returned with the receipt book.

A search of the receipt book allegedly found that a receipt in the sum of $750 had been written up.

The virtual complainant then checked his account and found that monies in the amount of $750 were not accounted for.

When the accused was asked of the transaction she allegedly said it was done by her but that she had no knowledge what happened to the money.

On May 9, 2016 the accused was arrested and cautioned and it was here that she said, “I did not have a chance to clear myself.” She also denied the allegations during the police interview.

Attorney at Law Stephen R. Daniels, speaking on behalf of Prinsloo, said his client is 36 years old and is from South Africa. He said that the woman who lives at Mount Healthy only came to the territory in October 2015.

Media threatened

As this news site's reporter was leaving the court house at John's Hole, Prinsloo inquired as to the reporter’s purpose of being in the courtroom and taking notes.

When the reporter told her who he was, Prinsloo made what could be described as a veiled threat, demanding that her name not be carried in any news report and saying that if she sees her name carried she would take action against the media house.

@ Christi: hell yes!!! it matters because the system functions far different when it comes to those white folks and US black folks(just saying, I am not a racist)...the black person might not have gotten any bail and I can guarantee you, that white South African woman will not be asked to leave the territory(say what you want)...time a few of white friend call the White House and pay that 750.00 all will be well

Reporting on Crime is important, however is it really all important to immediately stick a label on a person , A Kittitian, a Tortolian, a black man a white woman? If we truly want to live in a non racist, segregating community could not the new reports stop with sticking labels on people...It could possibly- perhaps unlikely- but possibly stop all the dividers who like to to be heard "convicting" a person because he or she is not from here....lets set a sample...maybe?

@ Who started :the truth hurts but one should keep it real and judging by your blog you have no clue about racism; if there is one place on this earth were all persons live in harmony is this territory: this little BVI is populated by over 100 different nationalities without any racial crimes and that is a fact( we have no hate crime in BVI).. The woman in the article is white and she is also from South Africa so what is your concerns(just asking?)

@ call a racist a racist: you could be right and if that is what it will take for me not to become a second-class-citizen in the BVI; then leave me be a racist....if calling a spade a spade and a glass of milk a glass of milk makes me a racist then I am fine....

@ Wize Up...In my interpretation, "Ning" is just using a little bit of sarcasm or "pun on words", so hence, they are not really implying or suggesting that people should steal because things are "getting real tough".
