Some parents unable to give children school lunch- FSN
“We are overwhelmed by the food we got from the Althea Scatliffe Primary School. This food will be given to families who don’t have. Whatever is brought in to us we would make sure that we give to families in need,” said Director of FSN Dr Sylvia M. Simmons.
She said the organisation feeds 50 to 70 families every month and that the donation is timely. “It will assist in making sure some children go to school with some kind of lunch because sometimes mothers tell us that they don’t have anything in their cabinets to give the children to take to school.
“When organisations like Althea Scatliffe Primary School and a number of other places give us food, they can be assured that families who really need it get it. How do we control that? We ensure that those who come to us are not [abusing] the donations. We make sure there is a need before they get the opportunity to get the items,” she said.
Principal of the Althea Scatliffe Primary School Marietta C. Flax-Headley said to wait for the Government to give all of the time is not feasible. “We as a big school, the biggest primary school in the territory, we have been asking all the time for persons to give back to us. So we said we are always asking, why don’t we give?” she said.
Flax-Headley noted that some time ago there was an appeal by the FSN for persons to make donations to the entity to aid its drive towards helping persons in need.
“We decided that this is a good initiative for our children who might be more fortunate than most. We had each class donate an item and then we combined all of the items to make the donation today,” she said.
