ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – The Althea Scatliffe Primary School (ASPS) today May 8, 2015 made a sizeable donation of food items to the Family Support Network (FSN), having felt compelled to give since the school itself has been the recipient of gifts out of the kindness of persons.

“We are overwhelmed by the food we got from the Althea Scatliffe Primary School. This food will be given to families who don’t have. Whatever is brought in to us we would make sure that we give to families in need,” said Director of FSN Dr Sylvia M. Simmons.

She said the organisation feeds 50 to 70 families every month and that the donation is timely. “It will assist in making sure some children go to school with some kind of lunch because sometimes mothers tell us that they don’t have anything in their cabinets to give the children to take to school.

“When organisations like Althea Scatliffe Primary School and a number of other places give us food, they can be assured that families who really need it get it. How do we control that? We ensure that those who come to us are not [abusing] the donations. We make sure there is a need before they get the opportunity to get the items,” she said.

Principal of the Althea Scatliffe Primary School Marietta C. Flax-Headley said to wait for the Government to give all of the time is not feasible. “We as a big school, the biggest primary school in the territory, we have been asking all the time for persons to give back to us. So we said we are always asking, why don’t we give?” she said.

Flax-Headley noted that some time ago there was an appeal by the FSN for persons to make donations to the entity to aid its drive towards helping persons in need.

“We decided that this is a good initiative for our children who might be more fortunate than most. We had each class donate an item and then we combined all of the items to make the donation today,” she said.

I am happy to see the way Mrs. Flax Headly is thinking. She knows that children cannot learn if they are hungry. Let us hope that this is a beginning and that other schools and the churches in the community will follow her example. May God continue to bless you and your school .mrs. Headly.

While I agree with you that there are some women do not prioritize and having children they can't afford, a lot of women are really struggling with this issue even though their priorities are in order. Is the truth people.

just a question: why give a gift then turn around and have it all over the news; something should be given out of love and not for publicity.... confidentiality....

Parents don't have jobs, school children going to school hungry, social service have no money but the NDP government can spend 80 million dollars on consultant fees in 3 1/2 years, while public servant has not receive one cent increment in 3 1/2 years, this is gross disrespect, lack of conscious and lack of care for the very people who give you a vote of confidence to manage their affairs, the NDP government is nothing more than a bunch of brain dead leaders and administrators whit zero brain function.

If you out there getting kids, then you should be able to feed them. It takes two to make a child. the same energy they use to make children let them put it towards working and feeding there family. Some people just want to sit at home and get kids , then expect the government or other people to feed them. There are young hard back men out there who just want to lime and smoke weed. that $10 can buy food. This stupid practice sames to come down from the states with there welfare nonsense. Yes some people can fall on hard times , but don't tell me that those people can't afford as much as a simple sandwich. Koolaid goes a long way.... laziness.....But on the other end it's nice what the school did.
