DUFF'S BOTTOM, Tortola, VI - Some landlords in the Virgin Islands (VI) have been evicting and discriminating against returning nationals placed into mandatory quarantine out of fear that those individuals may be infected with COVID-19.

This is according to Deputy Premier and Minister for Health and Social Development, Hon Carvin Malone (AL) who told the Virgin Islands, House of Assembly (HoA) that several issues have now been highlighted by the Health Emergency Operation Centre (HOEC) over the treatment of those who were approved to return to the VI.

"HEOC has flagged several issues related to the mandatory quarantine arrangements for persons who have been cleared to re-enter the Territory since June 2020, one of these involved discriminations against and eviction of returning nationals who are subjected to mandatory quarantine by landlords due to fears and stigma around COVID-19," Hon Malone said.

Speaking at today's June 11, 2020, Ninth Sitting of the Second session of the Fourth HoA, Hon Malone further said, "A lot of communication would be required  to dismiss most of these fears as it is a preventative measure to save lives and livelihood and not an indication of the presence of the COVID-19 virus."

HEOC recommends limiting returns

In May 2020, Hon Malone announced that effective June 2, 2020, the Territory would accept inbound flights for returning nationals, belongers, holders of permanent residence and naturalised citizens who were locked out the VI as a result of the COVID-19 border closure.

He said other recommendations from the HEOC is the need to limit the number of weekly arrivals in the Territory based on security personnel and rooms available in the government quarantine facility.

"We have authorised over 350 rooms, we have secured up to 250 thus far and others are being negotiated as we speak."

He said other recommendations include a need to boost human resources capacity in order to fully operationalise the transition for the 'red alert stamp it out phase', 'to the orange alert manage it phase' of the HEOC national action plan against the pandemic.

The Minister said the HEOC findings and protocols established will now be placed into context and implemented regardless of propaganda from those "seeking to sow seeds of discontent and confusion in the country."

Why not test people before or on arrival like the rest of the world is doing? Maybe just maybe take a look at how the USVI is handling visitors and allowing their economy to operate? Why does the BVI have to make things more difficult than they need to be?

Because they LOVE THE POWER AND CONTROL that COVID has presented for them. They can now bully people and control their lives under the guise of 'we love you and want to keep you safe!'.

          Not only Barbados. Elsewhere too.

Let the negative and indisciplined ones keep talking.

We have to do what we have to do.

We have a breakout of persons with the virus and those same ones will change their tongue about letting in people.

You can’t and will never please them all but I know every person on Tortola now happy to be alive.

Yes because some tenants move out to put in persons in quarantine. Not discriminating as it just a preventative measure, but landlords should be notified before quarantine persons who are not even on the lease or live there are out there to quarantine.
