Some children & single mothers go hungry – Hon. Fraser

- Implores Gov’t to look into it

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – There are children in the Virgin Islands who go to school hungry or without having lunch which is quite unfortunate, divulged 3rd District Representative Hon. Julian Fraser, RA and is appealing to Government to look into the social issue and see how they can address it.

He was at the time speaking under “Other Business” on July 3, 2012 during the House of Assembly (HOA) sitting.

“Could you imagine having to study on an empty stomach, could you imagine going to school with an empty stomach? This is our community and it is time Madame Speaker that our Government take a different look at the way our social programmes are so as to make sure [to help] the individuals, not just children, but single parents who can’t make ends meet,” Hon. Fraser stated.

He declared that the problem is a known fact but people just don’t want to talk about it.

“In this economy, there are so many people out of work, people can’t pay their rent. Something has to be put in place; I am not saying that we have to go to the system in the United States where there is the welfare programme...but something has to be put in place. We don’t have unemployment insurance here, if you lose your job you are on your own, if you don’t have work you can’t find food to eat because you don’t have money. It’s not like you have food stamps and what have you,” the district representative stressed.

Against this backdrop, he made an appeal that the community needs to be taken care of and beseeched Government to look into it.

Premier Dr. D. Orlando Smith acknowledged that there are some social issues in the Territory and agreed that something needs to be done about the socially disadvantaged.

That's true but some of them begging have the latest iPhone and other gadgets. Tell them put their priorities in order. we have some that really need help but 90% of them balling brokes look at their hair, nails, gadgets and liming every weekend. this welfare mentality got to stop. all govt got to do is help them find a decent job. the more severe ones can get help.

Providing free school breakfast or lunch to those eligible for free school meals would be a start. Though clearly it would not address the underlying issue of poverty, [it] would at least mean that children from poor families would not jeopardies their chances of learning...my two cents

Children with two parents have the same issues Hon. Fraser because you guys letting some gold diggers in the place, and they are after whatever they can get so they don't go hungry. Speak to immigration and labour from looking hand outs for your people.

Whilst I agree that some of us have it a lot harder than others, I think that most parents have their priorities up-side-down. Parents need to understand that children that they bring into this world is their responsibility. Parents must learn to do without their wants, and provide for their children's needs!! Another thing is that some of these elected reps are sending wrong signals and giving young able people a check every month. Human beings are easy to adapt, give assistance when it is absolutely necessary. Stop making parents become dependant on the check. Let then know they must MAKE SACRIFICES AND SAVE FOR A RAINY DAY!

Some people simply shouldnt be allowed to have children. If you cant afford to feed, clothe and look after them properly keep it zipped up and legs closed! Be responsible

yep it do have some parents that have their priority in the wrong order. Kids come to school hungry, stained clothes, half filled lunch bags and when you see some of their parents you have no choice but to shake your head in disgust!! They rocking the latest gears, fancy rides, nails + toes, hair do, latest tech gadgets, out liming, thats the mother. lets no even jump on the fathers. Yall ministers need to come to PTA meetings and you will hear the plees of these teachers and principals (both schools & daycares). It was so bad that one of the teachers pleaded in the PTA with parents if they cannot afford to send their child with lunch, tell the child teacher in advance they can provide food for that child as a favor. A hungry child have a hard time stayin focus in class. I am a single parent and i have my priority set. My child is first, her belly is full with clean skin, hair and clothes. Let me eat the crackers and bread and my child get the cook food. but it do have some single parents are still not meeting ends meet with 2 jobs and they do need some assistance. You can see it, they use what they have, make it stretch and gladly take offers/help, 2nd hand clothing, etc.

Problems need solutions since their properly addressed, so I think the politican and HOA need to either take a pay cut of one or so month(s) or donate their holiday pay toward the needs of the less fortunate, then they can seek more help by starting in an economically good direction and hopefully 'others' will follow; this issue is not goin to be fixed swiftly!

The comments bring to issue to the table and now Premier Dr. Smith will fix this matter with the support of his government and the opposition. Support the solution Hon Fraser by doing and move from discussing and get to fixing.
